How HDB is tackling loan sharks
WE THANK Ms Eng Lay Qing ('Innocent loan-shark victim's 3-year tale of endless woes'; Jan 19) and Mr Ranjan Chakraborty ('Protect HDB owners better against loan sharks'; Forum Online, Jan 26) for their feedback.
Moneylending by loan sharks is illegal and criminal and Housing Board residents should report harassment by loan sharks to the police immediately.
Under the law, a person who has an identity card must report his change of residence within 28 days. It is an offence to report a false address and offenders can be fined or jailed, or both.
Since April 2008, persons who apply to update their home address in their identity cards must furnish proof that they are living at that address to minimise the likelihood of loan-shark borrowers who use outdated or false addresses.
To protect residents better against loan-shark activities, HDB flat lessees who sublet their rooms must register the subletting with the board within seven days of doing so.
They must also notify HDB of any changes to their tenants' particulars, including the addresses, whenever they renew or terminate the subletting contract.
We are working closely with the relevant authorities to prevent innocent HDB residents from being harassed by loan sharks.
