Latest Weather And Haze Situation

It was fair and dry over most parts of the Mekong sub-region except for the eastern and central parts of the sub-region where there were a few showers. Based on the latest satellite imagery, scattered to widespread hotspots were detected in the northern parts of Lao PDR. Clusters of scattered hotspots were also detected in Myanmar. Elsewhere in the sub-region, scattered hotspots were detected. Moderate to dense transboundary smoke haze was observed to blanket the eastern parts of Myanmar as well as the northern parts of Thailand, Lao PDR and Viet Nam. Moderate to dense smoke haze was observed over other parts of Myanmar while moderate haze was observed over the central parts of Thailand. Very unhealthy air quality levels were recorded by the stations located in the northern parts of the sub-region while unhealthy air quality levels were measured by stations situated in the central and eastern parts of the sub-region.

Elsewhere in the ASEAN region, showers were observed except for the Peninsular Malaysia, northern and western parts of Borneo and the central parts of Sumatra where it was mostly partly cloudy. Isolated hotspots were mostly detected in Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Localised smoke plumes were observed to emit from a hotspot detected in the eastern parts of Peninsular Malaysia.

Weather And Haze Outlook

While showers were expected over the eastern parts of the Mekong sub-region, the prevailing dry conditions over the rest of the sub-region are forecast to continue in the coming days. Under these conditions, the elevated hotspot and smoke haze situation are expected to continue and the risk of transboundary smoke haze occurrence remained heightened. The prevailing winds over the sub-region are expected to blow from the southeast or southwest. In the rest of the ASEAN region, the prevailing wet weather is forecast to continue and the hotspot activity is expected to remain low. The prevailing winds over areas north of the Equator are forecast to be light and variable in direction while the prevailing winds over areas south of the Equator are expected to blow from the southwest or northwest.

No need to smoke ciggies. Just breathe in deeply to enjoy.

Don't worry, even if you can smell the smoke and you can't see the next HDB block from where you are, the air quality is still declared to be in the 'healthy to moderate' range.

That's the kind of regime it is.

Haze In Penang: Unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) Recorded

TheStar reported that “according to the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre’s (ASMC) website, no hotspots indicating substantial open burning are happening in Malaysia and only a single hotspot has been detected on Sumatra island,”

“However, satellites have registered hundreds of hotspots spread across millions of hectares in eastern Myanmar and throughout Laos. It is believed that these hotspots are the result of farmers practising traditional slash-and-burn agriculture, which entails large swathes of woodlands being cleared and then burned to enrich the soil with potassium and phosphate while killing pests.
