THE Straits Times swept 10 of the 14 journalism awards at an annual ceremony to honour the best in journalism at Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) English and Malay Newspapers Division on Tuesday. Scoop artist Leslie Lopez, senior regional correspondent for the paper, led the near clean sweep. He was named the Journalist of the Year and also won the Story of the Year Award - for the third consecutive year - for his scoop on the capture of terror leader Mas Selamat.

Ms Jessica Cheam from The Straits Times' Money Desk was named Young Journalist of the Year. The English daily also won the Feature of the Year, Commentary/Analysis of the Year, Headline of the Year, Infographics of the Year, Layout/Page Design of the Year, News Picture of the Year, Feature Picture of the Year awards, as well a Special Award of the Year for Excellence.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, EMND's Editor-in-Chief Patrick Daniel highlighted some of the challenges facing the group in the years ahead.
'We will have to focus far more on efficiency than we've done in the past. We must be at the forefront of the 'work smarter' movement', he said. Another challenge is 'to stay on top of the game in everything we do - from art and photo and page layout to news reporting and commentary and analysis', he added.

READERSHIP of Singapore newspapers has remained strong despite competition from a multitude of news sources on the Internet because the mainstream media has continued to remain a trusted news sources, said Acting Minister of Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew. While media companies in other countries faced financial difficulties, Singapore media has avoided the same through prudent management and a sound working relationship between employers and staff, he said.

Readership of local dailies, both offline and online, is healthy, said Mr Lui, noting that newspaper readership has gone up by 5 per cent between 2008 and 2009 while that for their online versions has risen by 45 per cent during the same period. He also referred to the latest Nielsen Media Index survey conducted between July 2008 and June 2009, which revealed that 75 per cent of those polled picked newspapers as their preferred source of news. 'There are many reasons why this is so.

One key reason is that the mainstream media in Singapore has continued to remain a trusted news source. The mainstream media is accurate, timely and balanced in their reporting,' said Mr Lui, in his written reply to a question from Hong Kah GRC MP Zaqy Mohamad in Parliament on Monday.
He also cited a survey by the US-based Public Relations firm, Edelman, which revealed that 68 per cent of the respondents in Singapore found newspapers to be the most trusted source of information. This is significantly higher than the international average of only 34 per cent which trusted newspapers as a credible source of information.

Mr Lui added that Singapore's mainstream media companies have been innovative in exploiting new business opportunities to remain viable. For example, the Singapore Press Holdings has been quick to launch online version of The Straits Times, Business Times and Lianhe Zaobao. Responding to another question from Mr Zaqy, the minister said both the mainstream and new media here are important avenues for the Government to disseminate news and public information.

Nothing new, PAP will always award their pets when it is due. A bone is enough for their pet to keep barking down the road especially when election is near. No competition in local media, so easy job and thus easy self award.

'We will have to focus far more on efficiency than we've done in the past. We must be at the forefront of the 'work smarter' movement'...

Oh yea, very efficient n quick in pleasing their OWNER the PAP and working smarter to defend PAP and attack anti-establishment.

he said. Another challenge is 'to stay on top of the game in everything we do...

Of course, to stay on top, the journalist will continue to self-censor, writing unobjective news and simply follow instructions without questioning. Such is definitely a challenge ahead. Todate they remain ON TOP of the obedient list in the eyes of their master and will continue to strive ahead..
