If you traced the history of the region back 3,000 years, you'd see that the tribes living there had always been warring against each other, taking turns to establish a temporary majority before being persecuted or exiled or massacred - Babylonians, Phoenicians, Persians, Hebrew-speaking tribes, Romans, Christians, Muslims, back to Christians after the Crusaders invaded and so on. British Palestine had a majority of Arab Christians, not Muslims.
