COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement

As previously announced, Harvard requires being up-to-date on COVID vaccination for all students who will be on campus. As we work to continue the high levels of vaccination needed to protect our community, Harvard highly recommends being up-to-date per the CDC definition for all Harvard community members, including faculty, staff, and researchers, who will have any on-campus presence. New employees to Harvard will be required to attest to having received their primary series upon hire. As of December 22, 2022, current employees are no longer required to submit COVID-19 documentation to HUHS for compliance purposes.
For more information about how to submit your COVID-19 vaccine information, please see Immunization Compliance.

Bivalent/Updated Booster Requirement

Harvard requires the new bivalent COVID-19 booster for all eligible students with an on-campus presence. The new bivalent (or updated) booster became available in the United States starting in September 2022. Any booster received prior to September 2022 was not the bivalent booster. The new bivalent booster and any future CDC vaccination recommendations are strongly encouraged for all faculty, staff, and researchers.
Starting in January 2023, students can call HUHS primary care to schedule a bivalent COVID-19 booster or flu vaccine appointment or receive their vaccination during a scheduled PCP visit.

Important Notes About HUHS’ Vaccine Requirement, Eligibility, and Offerings

Eligibility for Updated/Bivalent COVID-19 Vaccine: You are eligible to get the new bivalent/updated booster if it has been at least two months since your last COVID vaccine OR it has been three months since your most recent COVID infection (if applicable).
  • All vaccines authorized by the FDA or the World Health Organization (WHO) will meet the University’s primary series vaccine requirement. The list of vaccines authorized by WHO is updated regularly.
  • The new bivalent/updated COVID-19 vaccine cannot be used as part of the COVID primary series.
  • Individuals who received their primary vaccine series outside the United States should seek a FDA or WHO-approved bivalent/updated booster that is available to them. Mixing of brands is acceptable.
  • Students who receive their new bivalent booster outside of HUHS must submit their information to HUHS through the Patient Portal to ensure their medical record stays updated. If you have already submitted your COVID vaccination documentation to [email protected] you do not need to resubmit to the Patient Portal. Vaccines received outside of the United States must include documentation in English.
Please be sure your vaccination card shows the following:
  1. Your name
  2. Date of birth
  3. The manufacturer of the vaccine
  4. The date(s) on which the vaccines were received. If you already have an approved exemption for the COVID-19 vaccine, you do not need to submit additional information for a booster exemption.
  • Exceptions will be provided only for medical or religious reasons. Please contact HUHS’ medical records team for more details at [email protected].
  • If you receive the COVID-19 vaccine, or any other vaccine, from Harvard University Health Services, you do not need to submit the documentation. Your information is documented in your medical record at the time of your vaccine
