Starting in March next year, first time litterbugs will be fined $500, up from the current $300.
Senior leaders of voluntary welfare- and environmental non-gonvernmental-organisations will also be trained and authorised to enforce littering offences in January.
The new move was announced by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan on Saturday morning during an anti-littering community event in Bukit Panjang.
He also spoke about examining the legal implications of following up on littering complaints, if the litterbug can be identified and the complainant testifies in court.
