HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR LEE KUAN YEW
On the first trip a few rookie MPs like me accompanied Mr #LeeKuanYew to China in June 2006, we sat down to dinner in an Italian restaurant at 8 pm.
The dinner ended only near midnight, and only because Mrs Lee exhorted, "Harry, enough already. Let them rest!"
Mr Lee was intent on making the most of the time he had with us - to understand what we considered issues relevant to #Singapore's continued success and to share his views. He took pains to explain his varied considerations, like a personal tutor!
He was then already 83 and had stepped down as PM for 16 years. In every meeting, he put forward Singapore's position and persuaded his hosts why their interests were aligned with Singapore's.
Mr Lee would have been 92 today. He was not around to see Singaporeans celebrate Singapore50 (#SG50) nor vote in #GE2015. Had he been able to, I believe he would have been comforted by our collective actions.
Mr Lee's total dedication to Singapore reminds everyone of us to treasure our hard earned success as a nation, and how much we owe it to each other to keep it going. - Jo Teo
