A Chinese man who had a large mole removed from his face found its absence made it difficult for him to convince police of his true identity when he tried to obtain a replacement personal ID card, mainland media reports.
The man surnamed Yi, 58, who lives in the Dadukou district in the southwest of Chongqing, encountered the problem after he recently lost his original ID card, the Chongqing Economic Times reported.
When he went to the local police station to obtain a replacement, he was unable to prove his identity because the large black mole on his right cheek, which was prominent on the original ID card photograph had gone, the report said.
Yi told them he had paid a doctor 100 yuan (HK$116) to remove the mole eight years before, but did not have any documentation to prove he underwent the minor surgery.
So the police then visited Yi’s six neighbours to confirm that Yi was the person he claimed to be – and that he had indeed had the surgery – before issuing him with a new ID card.
There have been frequent recent reports by mainland media of people that have undergone changes to their facial appearance and then failed to pass the police’s facial recognition tests when they have tried to renew their personal ID cards.
A woman living in the same district of the city as Yi, who underwent plastic surgery six years ago, spent five days obtaining the proof of her surgery along with copies of her medical bills in order to prove her identity, according to a report in June.
The article said Chinese police were now extremely strict in granting approvals of personal ID cards because of cases of people using fake personal information when carrying out crimes.
