I DISAGREE with the Reform Party's suggestion ('Reform Party calls for run-off system'; Monday). While such a proposal may look good on paper, it certainly is not feasible.

First, holding a run-off system is both time-consuming and resource-consuming. A second round of election means having to deploy civil servants at each polling station as well as having to declare another working day as a public holiday. This greatly affects our economy's productivity as employers are once again deprived of the services of their employees for an additional day.

Second, a second round will prolong the already intense election period. The stressful conditions will not only tax the candidates and their election teams but also drain the energy of the nation and divert the attention of citizens away from truly important issues such as the impending global economic crisis.

Singapore has always prided itself on being efficient in handling issues, be it political, economic or social. Let us not complicate matters for the sake of practising 'perfect democracy'. We should apply democracy realistically in the modern-day context.
