Xinhua News Agency, Changchun, June 19th: The follower of the light - the story of the "Changguang people"

Xinhua News Agency reporter Chen Jun, Lang Qiuhong, Meng Hanqi

Humans get 80% of the information through the eyes. If you want to see more clearly than others, and look farther, you must be brighter than others' eyes.

Optical instruments are such "eyes".

Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has such a group of followers.

They use optics to extend the human eye as far as possible, to the fine, to the microscopic, and to find the mysteries of the world from the vast universe and the microcosm.

Starting from 14 million kilograms of millet, we will refine the first optical glass in the new China, and put the eye of the space in the "breaking boat" to the gods of the five gods; then go to the "no ordinary road" to create a world-leading large-diameter silicon carbide reflection. mirror.

For 70 years, they never stopped to follow the light.

The farthest light, the most hasty of them

Light, deep and distant. In order to get close to it, the followers only have to race against time.

Into the Changguang Institute, the oncoming researchers are always on the go.

They greeted each other very specially: "How many days are there from the small topic?" Some even accurate to the minute: "How many points can you give me today?"

“Sensitivity to time is unique to Changguang people.” Zhang Xuejun, deputy director, said that all the projects undertaken by the institute are national projects with heavy tasks and tight schedules. Many projects are reversed and can not be delayed for one day.

Starting from the first generation of optical people in New China, the sense of urgency has been closely following them.

In January 1952, when Wang Dazhao, deputy director of the Preparatory Office of the Instrument Museum of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, came to Changchun, China had almost a blank in the manufacture of optical instruments. He purchased a ton of optical instruments from abroad, and the price was equivalent to one ton of gold. Willing to sell.

The 14 million kilograms of millet is the first funding allocated by the state to the founding of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Instrument Museum (the predecessor of Changguang Institute).

In order to establish the optical industry in New China as soon as possible, the gentle and elegant Wang Dawei became resolute.

He worked with the workers to sort out the land. Tired of being hungry, sitting on the wasteland, eating green onions, miso, chewing sorghum rice.

In order to speed up the progress, in 1953, he and the director of the Optical Materials Research Office Gong Zutong set up the stove and test process day and night... In just a few months, China’s first optical glass was born.

In the youth, Wang Dazhao (middle) took a group photo with the former Soviet Union exchange experts (data photo). Xinhua News Agency

In the following years, Wang Dazhao and his colleagues successively developed the first electron microscope, the first high-temperature metallographic microscope, and the first large-scale spectrometer, which created the “eight big pieces and one soup” and laid the foundation for the optical industry in New China.

In 1961, the first ruby laser was born in Changguang, only one year later than the world's first.

Under the self-reliance and hard work of the older generation of optical people, New China first realized import substitution in the field of optics, and optical researchers first realized an equal dialogue with the world.

Facing the country's "card neck" field, hurry up and hurry up, it is the belief of several generations of Changguang people.

In 2003, the rice-level resolution space camera developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences academician and researcher Wang Jiaxuan was launched with the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft, filling the gap in China's lack of high-resolution space cameras.

In 2018, Zhang Xuejun's team successfully created a four-meter silicon carbide mirror, breaking the dilemma that China can only import high-priced mirrors into small-caliber mirrors.

Today, some of Changguang’s technologies have achieved international leadership, and they have begun to accelerate. The team of Wang Zhi, who developed three important loads for the "Tai Chi" space gravitational wave, was almost all in the team from 7 am to 12 pm seven days a week. No time to eat, instant noodles became a staple food. Wang Zhi’s mobile phone shows the itinerary. In 2018, it flew 94 times and 130,000 kilometers, defeating 99.99% of the country...

The young people of Changguang are married to find the academician of the king, and the marriage certificate is ridiculous. "The party working in the house is fully paid, and the houseworker is all-inclusive." Academician Wang Jiaxuan slightly apologized to explain that Changguang’s work is too busy and he hopes that the other side will understand.

Zhang Xuejun said: "We also want to rest normally, but we start late, and we have a big gap with the advanced. We want to catch up and catch up. We must not rely on normal rhythm. We can only sleep less and invest more."

"When we catch up, there will be a normal life." The young man in the office is looking forward to it.

The most subtle light, the most focused on them

Light, fleeting, subtle and invisible. In order to capture it, the follower must be committed with no hesitation.

The southeast corner of Changchun, where Changguang is located, will always be the brightest place in the city at night. It is clearly the people who chase after the light. Why do they prefer the quiet night?

Take the ultra-stable telescope in the "Tai Chi" space gravitational wave as an example. The final stability requirement is within 1 picometer (1 picometer = 0.001 nm), which requires researchers to reach the extreme every step. In order to avoid being affected by external airflow, vibration, etc., the best time for commissioning is late at night, and it is common to get off work at 4 or 5 am...

Some tests are carried out in a low temperature environment. Therefore, Sanfutian can also see researchers wearing thick cotton coats in the office and laboratory.

Follow the light, it sounds tall, but the work must start from the most basic.

The four-meter silicon carbide mirror is dazzling when it comes to the world. Using the telescope made of it, you can see the size of the fist in the space on the ground.

However, this mirror was created by researchers using both hands to “assemble the machine, stir the material, and smash the mirror blank”.

An important basis for the manufacture of four-meter silicon carbide mirrors is the use of CNC machine tools for optical processing. As early as the early 1990s, when almost all of the country used traditional polishing, the researcher Weng Zhi realized the importance of automated machine tools, just as Zhang Xuejun had just returned from studying abroad. They disregarded the eyes of others, bought an old machine tool, equipped parts, armed with thick gloves, holding wrenches and screwdrivers, and assembled them in the lab.

In the end, they set off the first optical CNC machining center in China, which was used in processing mirrors. As the mirror diameter gradually reaches 4 meters from 500 mm, the machine tools are constantly upgraded in their hands.

In the eyes of outsiders, researchers should be elegant and decent. However, the mirror mirror blank is made to deal with the dark silicon carbide powder every day. Whether it is a highly respected researcher or a young person who has just entered the office, it is often full of m&d and wash.

In fact, when the four-meter silicon carbide mirror was established, many people disagreed with Zhang Xuejun's idea. It is very difficult to use silicon carbide, and there is no such design route in the world. However, he insisted on choosing the path that others have not taken. Because the team of Zhao Wenxing of Changguang Institute has been studying in the field of optical materials for more than 20 years, he has rich experience in research. He believes that wisdom and accumulation from generation to generation will certainly succeed.

After 15 years, smashed four mirror blanks... The older generation has white hair, and the new generation has changed.

When Liu Zhenyu entered the office, he was handsome and handsome, and his return rate was very high. After joining the four-meter silicon carbide mirror project team, he spent many years in front of the processing machine, grinding the mirror day and night... work, irregular diet, lack of exercise. In the 5 years, he was fat 80 pounds.

Looking at his body for a blessing, Liu Zhenyu was a little sad. But the four-meter silicon carbide mirror was made, which diluted his frustration. “After entering the institute, you can participate in major national frontier projects. How many young people have such a high starting point?”

The most dazzling light, the most ordinary of them

Light, dazzling, awkward, however, most of the followers are standing outside the light and willing to be ordinary.

In the large dining hall where thousands of people are in Changguang, there is a regular old man dining at noon every day. He is 92-year-old academician Chen Xingdan. In the eyes of Changguang, he is called the "vow of silence" in the real version.

In the 1960s, China decided to independently develop atomic bombs and missiles. In 1963, the task of nuclear explosion radiation measurement fell to Chen Xingdan. At that time, no one knew what the nuclear explosion was like. How to do it depends on himself. Due to the confidentiality of the task, Chen Xingdan could not openly discuss with others. He shut himself into the lab and experimented day and night... One year later, the atomic bomb exploded, and the instrument he developed accurately recorded the power of the nuclear explosion. The news came, and a few insiders gathered together and celebrated silently.

In 1999, the state commended two bombs and one star hero. Chen Xingdan’s scientific research results were declassified and elected as academicians. At the moment, at the age of 72, he just said lightly: "I am doing things for the country, being commended and commenting on academicians, I have never thought about it."

Changguang is responsible for the national key projects of the project. The disciplines of light, machine, electricity and heat are closely intertwined. The particularity of work determines that most projects must be team-based.

In the early 1960s, in order to support the development of the "two bombs" of the country, Changguang took on the task of developing large-scale film tracking theodolites. More than 600 people were distributed in hundreds of sub-projects, which took five and a half years to complete research and development. In the early 1990s, Wang Jiaxuan set up a team of 300 people to overcome the courage of the boat, and it took 10 years to overcome the Shenzhou five camera.

No one can fight alone, everyone is indispensable. Here, many papers cannot be published, and the results cannot be promoted.

God is on the heavens, and the whole country is full of joy. But many people don't know that because the first picture returned by the camera is not clear, the camera's chief designer, Wang Jialu, under great pressure, successfully commanded the thrilling camera focusing process.

It is the researcher Han Changyuan who let Wang Jiaxuan have the bottom gas.

He was originally engaged in optical design work. Because of the early death of Jiang Zhuying, an outstanding disciple of Wang Dazhao in 1982, the optical inspection field lost the leader. Obeying the organization, Han Changyuan set off the task of optical testing, and transformed the hero behind the scenes.

As a supporting technology, the testing center must participate in the detection of all tasks in the laboratory. This requires them to be on call anytime, anywhere. Whether it is New Year's Day, Spring Festival, or late at night.

In order to better simulate the operation of Shenzhou V camera in space on the ground, he and the team conducted numerous tests on various possible states and situations, and also developed various supporting testing equipments themselves; A complete set of vacuum imaging quality testing systems fills the gap in the country without similar detection systems.

"In Changguang, everyone is a devotee and a hero." Wang Jiaxuan said.

In the Changguang Institute, there is still an ancient grating scriber. Whenever someone stops here, it seems that they always feel a temperature. More than 60 years ago, this machine was designed, processed, ground, and adjusted by the older generation of Changguang people. It can mark thousands of lines in a unit of one millimeter. It is still in operation today. What kind of skill is this? What kind of spirit is it?

Not without hesitation. Wu Xiaoxia, the person in charge of the four-meter telescope project, worked overtime all the year round. The 7-year-old daughter often took care of the unit and could only bring the unit. Every time she waited for her to finish, the child had fallen asleep.

Wu Xiaoxia does not want her daughter to be engaged in her own industry, too tired. However, her daughter has shown great interest in engineering drawings and parts for a long time. She said that when she grows up, she must be a scientist like a mother.

Loyal, persistent. Science and technology to the country, passed on from generation to generation.

The follower is itself light.
