Some time back, we posted an article from fake news site, The Onion, on our facebook page titled “Obama Openly Asks Nation Why On Earth He Would Want To Serve For Another Term”. After getting some circulation, the article finally reached recently retired Aljunied MP, Lim Hwee Hua.

And she posted it up on her facebook.



To give her the benefit of doubt, she may have known that it was a spoof and posted it up to test the reactions of netizens.



Or not.

But what’s funny is the angry debate that ensued. 58 comments and some trolling later, still, no one’s noticed the spoof.



Nicely done Obama fans.

So this guy hates fake views, fakers, and liars. BUT DOESN’T KNOW IT’S FAKE NEWS???? Oh good god…..

More pertinently, the problem with Sinkies is that they lack a sense of irony. The humour of The Onion is just too subtle for Sinkie sheep. Sinkies are dull, binary thinkers. There are no shades of grey, no nuances in the simplistic minds of Sinkies. If it says "“Obama Openly Asks Nation Why On Earth He Would Want To Serve For Another Term”, then it means "Obama Openly Asks Nation Why On Earth He Would Want To Serve For Another Term". No scrutiny or analysis is needed. It is what it says on the tin. God are Sinkies gullible and ignorant

In this case, the most people were arguing whether he should run or not. This would not fall in the category of spoof or at least a well executed one. A good spoof must be patently and obviously wrong in the first place. Obama could just as well ask the question to generate debate or to milk publicity. Nobody is going to check or authenticate eerything that they hear or see.

The New Nation by Belmont Lay is substandard in everything they do. This is just another of their substandard work. I would however agree that most people do not know what irony, satire and similar genres including tongue in cheek comments.

But this is not an example and not even a poor one.

More pertinently, the problem with Sinkies is that they lack a sense of irony. The humour of The Onion is just too subtle for Sinkie sheep. Sinkies are dull, binary thinkers. Then watch the fun when one of the political identities picks this up and gives his or her view. It will be a laugh if a PAP MP pick this up for his facebook.

The shocking thing was not the news itself but that she posted the news sourced from The Onion.

Now maybe not everyone was aware what The Onion stood for, however Lim Hwee Hua was an ex-politician and a Cabinet Minister at that. Moreover, coming from a finance background she knew better to check the source than to simply believe things she wanted to.

US is in the midst of Republican primaries, with daily attacks on Obama mainly by Mitt Romney. Obama has been travelling the country, running TV ads against Romney, and engaging in his re-election, which has been formally announced. To almost all Americans, the Onion news would appear clearly satirical.

Half a world away in Singapore, maybe not. But an elite globally connected person like LHH should know better. Wasn't her team-mate a Foreign Minister???

Put another way, if it is true she put up this piece thinking it was real news worth discussing, then she has less common sense than 90% of Americans.

Our top 0.001% elite-paid former minister, now board member in an top global company ... out of touch with most basic issues of the #1 economic, military powerhouse.... ??? They're clearly all way over-paid and perhaps should us a refund (not just pay cut).

Not really lah, Mr Leongsam. There are a number of politically mature, discerning and intellectual forummers here who are not like that, such as Scroobal, Thick Face Black Heart, Conqueror, Auranvandil, Windsor, Fook Seng and TracyTan to name a few. And that's how the 20/80 percent rule works (technically known as the Pareto Principle). Basically this rule is that in any situation, it is the 20 percent that will contribute to 80 percent of any outcome. So forummers like them who make up the 20 percent contribute to 80 percent of the views here and that's the most important.

You should have more confidence in yourself, Mr Leongsam. The forum you host had attracted the likes of them who make such valuable contributions to the discussions of political issues here. It's to your credit actually and you should not short-change yourself.

Without the 80%, there would be no forum.

Its the same with a country. The top 20% of society needs the remaining 80% of the population to consume their products or utilize their services in order for their businesses to thrive. Without the 80% actively consuming, the top 20% will never make it rich.

Let's take it one step further. While the top 20% may produce 80% of the nation's wealth, they can only do courtesy of the blood, sweat, toil & tears of the remaining 80%. No one becomes a multi-millionaire except by standing on the backs of hundreds if not thousands of labourers and blue collar workers.

Without the 80%, there would be no forum.

That would only apply if this forum was run commercially. It isn't.

I can do without the 80%. They've actually lowered my IQ. Many a time, I've ended up posting garbage out of sheer boredom.
