100% Pure? New Zealand's deteriorating water raises a stink
By Praveen Menon, Reuters
1547847341432.png

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand's clean, green image took a beating this summer as tourists travelling through the countryside posted pictures of lakes and rivers off limits due to contamination by farm effluent, garbage and human faeces.

A booming dairy farming industry, along with a surge in tourists seeking unspoiled natural attractions, has taken its toll on the country's environment, heavily marketed as '100% Pure'. Particularly affected is its vast network of once pristine rivers and lakes, which are now some of the most polluted among OECD countries, according to some experts. About 60 percent of them are unfit for swimming, the Environment Ministry said in a report in 2014. Experts say water quality has deteriorated further since. In a Colmar Brunton survey conducted last month, 82 percent of respondents said they were "extremely or very" concerned about the pollution of rivers and lakes, more than any other issue including living costs, child poverty and climate change.

"(New Zealanders) are extremely worried that they are losing their ability to swim, fish and gather food from their rivers, lakes and streams," said Martin Taylor, the chief executive of Fish & Game New Zealand, a non-government agency that commissioned the survey. "People see those activities as their birthright, but over the last 20 years, that right is being lost because the level of pollution in waterways has increased as farming intensifies."

With an election coming next year, political experts say water pollution could be a key issue for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Ardern led a coalition to power in 2017 promising social reforms and laws to protect the environment, but business confidence has suffered under her government.

#TOOMANYCOWS

More than 13,000 people signed a #toomanycows Greenpeace campaign on Twitter launched last week calling for a ban on synthetic nitrogen fertiliser. "New Zealand already has way too many cows, and synthetic nitrogen is the key driver of the dairy intensification and expansion that leads to the dangerous double whammy of harm to rivers and climate," said Nick Young from Greenpeace. New Zealand has nearly five million cows, more than its human population of about 4.7 million.

Popular swimming holes near the famed Mt Taranaki in the west of New Zealand's North Island were shut this month due to high E.coli bacteria, an indicator of faecal contamination. Tests are underway to determine the cause, but effluent from nearby dairy farms has been blamed in the past for contaminating these waters. DairyNZ Chief Executive Tim Mackle says dairy farmers have been doing their bit, with 97 percent of waterways on dairy farms fenced off from cows, and significant work done to establish riparian margins and wetlands.

"The reality is that all types of land use contribute to water quality – and that farming, whether it’s vegetables, fruit, beef, sheep, dairy, deer or even wine – must all work together to make sure waterways are protected," Mackle said in a statement. "The most polluted rivers actually run through urban centres, and this is where the public can do their bit too."

Only about 15 percent of New Zealand’s streams run through dairy farms, he added.

'OWN GOAL'

Dairy and tourism directly contribute about 3.5 percent and 6.1 percent respectively to New Zealand's $200 billion GDP.

Both industries rely on the country's clean, green image with cascading rivers, unspoiled forests and lush pastures that made it the ideal backdrop for the popular Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie series. The sparsely populated country is spread over a mountainous area about the size of United Kingdom or California, more than a quarter of which is set aside for reserves and national parks.

Hoards of tourists are expected to arrive in the country next month during the Chinese New Year, a peak travel season, which residents feel will take a further toll on the natural environment. Chinese are the second largest source of tourists to New Zealand after neighbouring Australia, according to 2018 data. Apart from polluting the water, residents also fear mass tourism and freedom campers may destroy the country's iconic landscape, as seen in places like Venice, Boracay and Bali.

Overcrowding in Venice forced the local administration to restrict access to tourists while Boracay was shut down last year, after mass tourism turned the famed Philippines island into a "cesspool". Richard Davies, tourism policy manager at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, said the increase in the number of campers has caused problems in some areas, waste being one of them. "We have a collective duty to care for our environment and for New Zealand, and there have been a number of initiatives to help educate local and international campers on how to camp responsibility, and funding for infrastructure to help local bodies to address the issues that can arise," he said.

Mike Joy, a senior researcher at Victoria University of Wellington’s Institute for Governance and Policy Studies says the environment is paying the price for hands-off governance and the intensification of dairy and tourism industries. "It's an own goal…they are shooting themselves in the foot. The biggest value add this country can have is its clean, green image and they are just ruining that image,” Joy said.

The government has said it is committed to improving water quality. In 2017 it set a national target of making 90 percent of New Zealand’s large rivers and lakes swimmable by 2040, with an interim target of 80 percent swimmable by 2030. Joy, who is a member of some government working groups, said change will only happen if governments take on the powerful dairy and tourism industries. "Right now, a lot more money is spent on spin and propaganda but there's been very little change."

Unruly tourists spotted in Wellington by eagle-eyed locals

Unruly British tourists strike again (Video: NZ Herald)

news.com.au
The unpopular tourist group making their way through New Zealand appear to have arrived in the capital city of Wellington.
Members of a group of British tourists dominating this week’s headlines for their unruly behaviour in Auckland and Hamilton in the North Island have been spotted in Wellington, according to a flurry of social media posts.

Earlier this week, the family sparked outrage after leaving rubbish at a popular beach in New Zealand, and launching a tirade of abuse towards locals when asked to pick it up.

Then, several restaurant owners came forward alleging members of the same group refused to pay for food or services, hectoring hospitality staff and claiming their food had been contaminated by ants or hair.

On Wednesday, a 26-year-old female member of the group pleaded guilty in the Hamilton District Court to stealing energy drinks, a rope and sunglasses from an Auckland service station on two separate occasions.

The court heard Tina Maria Cash stole a can of Red Bull from a Caltex service station at Albany on December 31.

Facebook user Bart Blithe posted photos on Facebook, saying he had seen some of the tourists in the Z petrol station in Tawa, one of Wellington’s outer suburbs.

Blithe put up photos of a man in a red T-shirt and yellow shorts walking through the petrol station, though the photos are only taken from behind.

“I’ve warned the staff at Z who they are,” he wrote.

“They’re just getting a cellphone charged apparently.”

Blithe said he followed them around the petrol station before the group left, heading south on the motorway.

“I had warned staff before they got the fuel nozzle in the car.”

He said the people had a smoke and bought a coke while there.

An employee at Z said he was not sure whether the tourists had visited, as they had many customers.

Comments on the page and on the popular Vic Deals page are asking where the group are now, with one woman saying they had been spotted in Newlands.

The sighting comes shortly after a Levin motel owner confirmed a carload of the group spent the night at his motel.

The owner, who asked not to be named, confirmed his overnight guests were at least part of the group. The confirmed sighting has prompted the mayor of Levin to issue a warning to residents and businesses.

The Levin motelier said members of the group had arrived on Wednesday night — and true to form tried three times to talk him down in price.

They checked in for five people, but he believed more may have stayed.

“They just kept getting out of the car,” he said.

However, he said they had behaved themselves and been “pretty quiet”.

Social media users are encouraging others to keep an eye out for the group, with one man saying he was driving around Wellington and would be looking out for their car.

Another person encouraged him to live stream them if he came across them.

Earlier this week, the New Zealand Herald claimed the tourists could be deported, after Immigration New Zealand (INZ) issued the family with a notice.

People on temporary visas can be served deportation notices relating to character.

Immigration officers advised the individuals of their appeal rights and provided the relevant documentation for them to appeal if they wanted to, INZ assistant general manager Peter Devoy said

How one family became the national enemy of New Zealand

'I'll knock your brains out'

Vanessa Brownnews.com.au
If we’ve learnt anything from this week, it’s that you don’t tick off a Kiwi.

More often than not, they are some of the friendliest folk around. But throw a group of foreign travellers who litter, swear and steal in to the mix — and you can kiss any ‘Kia Ora’ welcome goodbye.

The ‘unruly travellers’ who descended on the country’s North Island for a summer holiday didn’t waste much time making an enemy of the whole nation. Within days they found they found themselves in the spotlight, threatened with deportation, labelled “pigs” and could now even face a five-year ban from re-entering the country.

The foul-mouthed group claim they had simply visited New Zealand “to see the Hobbits” but what they’ve got instead is a tirade of hate and headlines that doesn’t look like going away anytime soon.

So how did the group’s overseas holiday go south so quickly?

Trashing Takapuna Beach

Their first run-in happened when instead of picking up after themselves during a visit to a popular beach, they left a trail of rubbish in their wake.

Bystanders at Takapuna Beach reserve asked the group to tidy the mess but were abused and threatened by the visitors — a scene all caught on camera.

The disturbing footage heard one young member threatening to “knock the brains out” of locals who challenged their behaviour.

Witness Krista Curnow told the New Zealand Herald the family of tourists surrounded her and shouted abuse.

“The young boy in the video came up to our group and emptied his bag of chips on our blanket, before laughing and ran away,” she said.

“Later on, the family packed up and left all their rubbish on the reserve. We were thinking, ‘Are you serious?’

“We asked them if the were going to pick up their rubbish and they said they weren’t coming back. So I followed them and I said, ‘Hey don’t come to our country and disrespect it like that.’

“Their response was basically if we have a problem then we can pick it up and that that’s what the council is for.

“That’s when they started getting quite violent. About four or five ladies stood around me in a half circle. They were saying they were going to hit me and I started walking backwards to get out of it.

“They turned violent and even grandma and the child got involved saying they wanted to punch my head in.”

The little boy in the video then started swearing and getting aggressive, coming up to Ms Curnow and her friends saying he was going to “knock your brains out”.

But in a follow up interview, group member John Johnson, said they came from a good family and his grandfather was the “10th richest man in England”.

The man, who said his friends and family had simply come to New Zealand “to see the Hobbits”, claimed they were the ones who copped the attack first, and that the whole ordeal had been blown out of proportion

Mr Johnson said his “respectable family” had been labelled “Irish scum” despite being from England, and claimed the young boy in the video was just speaking up for himself.

“We were sitting there, and a little boy smacked one of the kids. They come over and start calling us loads of names; ‘Go back to Ireland.’ We’re sitting there having a meal and we’re relaxing,” he said, according to the Herald.

“One of the guys got very violent to one of my friends and everybody got around us and we had no choice but to get up and leave and there was a mess there, because we couldn’t clean it up because we were badly intimidated by a group of people.”

One of the other tourists, David Johnson, says he “will never come to New Zealand again”.

“I was frightened for my kids at the beach,” he told the Herald.

“There were people throwing things at us.”

The footage soon went viral, and the large family group racked up a list of further offences that had them labelled as “trash” and “a**holes” by a local mayor and unwelcome in the country.

“They’re worse than pigs and I’d like to see them out of the country,” Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said.

Theft at a Petrol Station

It later emerged that their problematic behaviour begun at the start of December when members of the family were caught on CCTV stealing a Christmas tree and other items from an Auckland petrol station, and continued when a woman appeared in court on Wednesday for similar offences.

A 26-year-old female member of the group pleaded guilty in the Hamilton District Court to stealing energy drinks, a rope and sunglasses from an Auckland service station on two separate occasions.

The court heard Tina Maria Cash stole a can of Red Bull from a Caltex service station at Albany on December 31.

On the day of Ms Cash’s hearing, video emerged of a young boy from the group pulling the finger and yelling at media and locals outside the courtroom.

Footage captured by the New Zealand Herald shows a female walking away from the camera with a young boy by her side, flipping the bird at a journalist and shouting.

It is understood they have now been served deportation notices and are spending their last few days in the country under intense scrutiny and close observation, especially from those on social media.

Lucy Roberts, who witnessed the infamous incident at Takapuna Beach, said she was proud of Kiwis coming together to take a stand for what they think is right.

“It’s cool to see that people are supportive of how we treat our environment and also that this sort of behaviour is not okay,” she said.

“I think it will put other people off doing the same sort of thing. They won’t want to be the next ‘gypsy family’.”

Roberts said the British tourists’ behaviour was foul and disrespectful.

“I feel like they have tried to play the victim but I think everyone can see through that because of their actions.”

“It’s like they are taking the mickey and thinking they will get away with stuff. They don’t realise that Kiwis won’t put up with it.”

She said the sooner the family left, the better.

“It is not like they are doing any good for the country.

“They should be deported if they are misbehaving that much because we don’t want to send a message that it is okay to come to New Zealand and do things like that.”

Traveller’s home life revealed

The British group have been identified by British newspaper The Sun as having a reputation for anti-social behaviour in their native Britain.

Some of the family reportedly lived at a traveller site near Lutterworth, Leicestershire.

One nearby resident said the family had caused trouble there for many years.

“They copulate, defecate and urinate. It is never-ending.”

There were also reports of livestock being killed by the family’s dogs, drug use, thefts from local stores, and anti-social behaviour near the local Catholic Church.

“It’s the younger ones. They just do whatever they want to do.”

Where are they now?

While the families exact departure date from New Zealand is uncertain, although thought to be on Friday, but members of the group are currently thought to be hunkered down in Wellington.

Despite a quiet 24 hours since one of the tourists appeared in court on Wednesday, the family have left destruction in their wake as they journeyed around the central North Island.

Claims about the tourist group:

December 7:

Footage captured on CCTV cameras at Caltex in Albany snared the moment members of the family enter the store steal a Christmas tree.

As two adult women look around the store and grab items from the shelves, two children appear to be caught walking out the door with a Christmas tree.

One of the children was also caught on camera allegedly leaving the store with a pair of sunglasses.

About Jan 3:

A group of about 13 tourists order drinks and four meals at Backyard Bar & Restaurant in Northcote.

Roger Van Kempen, the manager of The Backyard Bar & Restaurant, claimed the group dined at his restaurant, put ants in their food and refused to pay for three meals worth about $55.

Two nights later when Van Kempen wasn’t working, the group refused to pay for two more meals worth almost $60, claiming there was hair in it, he said.

Jan 9:

Three members from the group entered the Montrose Cafe and ordered more than $110 worth of food before shoving food into an employee and making a daring escape without paying.

A group of the travellers also dine at Artwok eatery in Takapuna. They eat before threatening staff and walking out without paying.

Jan 11:

A man says he experienced the “worst flight” ever after being stuck beside a group of rowdy travellers on a flight from Hong Kong to Auckland.

He believes the group were linked to the troublesome travellers and said they were unruly and caused boarding delays. A link between this group and the NZ group has not been confirmed.

Jan 13:

Disturbing footage emerged of tourists dumping rubbish and empty alcohol bottles on Takapuna Beach — then threatening to “knock the brains out” of locals who challenged their behaviour.

The group from the beach dine at Nandos in Albany and demand a refund after ordering meals.

A group of travellers also dined at Mr India in Northcote where they only paid for one $16 meal but refused to pay for $250 worth of other food claiming there was hair in it.

Harvinder Kaur, owner of nearby Mr India, claimed they ate most of their food before putting hair in it and refusing to pay a $250 bill.

Jan 14:

The group check out of Ibis. The owner of Coffee Club next to the hotel reports them to police saying they were abusive and didn’t pay for a piece of chocolate cake.

Jan 15:

A petition was launched on Change.org to “get rid of” the group and “teach a lesson to future tourists that we do not accept such behaviour”.

Immigration NZ issues the group a deportation notice after they, and police, were called to Burger King Te Rapa, Hamilton, by staff after alleged unruly behaviour by the family of travellers.

A staff member said they were causing a nuisance, complaining about and asking for free food. The children were also banging coins on the machines, as other guests looked on. Staff decided to call police after they were walking through the drive-through.

Shortly afterwards they were stopped by police in the suburb of Harrowfield when officers found that two young children in their car were not in appropriate car seats. A family member was then taken by police to The Warehouse to buy two seats.

Jan 16:

A 26-year-old woman in the group appears in Hamilton District Court charged with theft, alleged to have stolen energy drinks, rope and sunglasses from an Auckland service station.

Tina Maria Cash, 26, admitted she stole energy drinks, rope and sunglasses from a Caltex service station at Albany on December 31.

On January 3, Cash returned to the Caltex with her children and stole more Red Bull, rope and sunglasses valued at $50.

The identities of the unruly tourists causing a storm up and down the country can be revealed.
The eldest member of the group, the Daily Mail Australia reports, is 55-year-old grandmother Barbara Doran.
And despite being known around New Zealand as “John Johnson”, the unofficial spokesman for the family is, in fact, named Joe Doran.

He’s married to Miley Doran and the pair reportedly have lived in various caravan parks around the East Midlands in the UK.
Barbara Doran told the Daily Mail she is too scared to sleep at night and that the family believe they are being “tortured” by the public.

The family — the so-called “holiday-makers from hell” — have made headlines around the world after leaving rubbish on Takapuna Beach and abusing a local woman. The group was also accused of leaving restaurants with unpaid bills and one member of the unruly clan pleaded guilty to stealing from an Auckland service station.
Over the weekend they were accused of leaving a Kiwi motel “stinking of kid’s poo”.
“I’m very, very frightened, honestly,’ Barbara Doran told the Daily Mail.
“I’m not going to go and get food without paying for it. I’m not going to put myself that low.

“I’ve never done it in England. I’m not going to come and do it here.”
Joe Doran told the New Zealand Herald last week that his family was respectable and denied the allegations.
That was before family member Tina Maria Cash, 26, pleaded to guilty to theft of Red Bull and sunglasses in the Hamilton District Court and paid $55 in reparations.
During the interview, Joe Doran claimed his grandfather was the “10th richest man in England”.
In a separate interview with Newshub, he claimed: “No member of my family stole anything at any stage in New Zealand. We were not brought up that way.’

Cash claimed that she had been “vomiting blood” since her arrest and claimed the family had been treated with “no respect”.
“If people come to the UK, they have rights,’ she said. “What are our rights here? We have none.”
PATH OF CARNAGE
The travellers have made headlines around the world since a video emerged of rubbish being strewn on a Takapuna Beachreserve. Bystanders asked the group to tidy the mess but were reportedly abused and threatened.
It has since emerged members of the group arrived in New Zealand on December 29. There have been several accounts of members refusing to pay for food or services, tormenting hospitality staff and claiming their food had been contaminated by ants or hair.
Last Wednesday, 26-year-old Tina Maria Cash pleaded guilty in the Hamilton District Court to stealing from an Auckland service station on two separate occasions.
The court heard Cash stole a can of Red Bull from a Caltex service station at Albany on December 31.

On January 3, the court heard she returned to the Caltex with her children and stole more Red Bull, rope and sunglasses valued at $50.
Last Tuesday the family was trespassed from Burger King Te Rapa after the family walked through the drive-through.
They had been at the restaurant earlier in the day causing a nuisance and complaining about and asking for free food.
It is understood they claimed to have hair in the food and were refunded more than $30.
On the weekend the “holiday-makers from hell” left rubbish strewn through a Levin hotel room with cleaners having to spend hours to get the accommodation back up to scratch.
A spokesman for the motel told Daily Mail Australia there were cigarette butts scattered on the ground, empty Red Bull cans thrown around the room and towels bunched up in the shower.

The cleaner also revealed the room was “stinking of poo”.
The cleaner said the room was “really messy, and it smelt like kid’s poo”.
“I had to open all the windows, and I told my boss to leave them open as well as the door, so it could air out,” the cleaner said.
According to the motel, spaghetti was found around the bed while cans and bottles of toiletry items were found dumped on the shower floor.

The British family who terrorised New Zealand are back in the United Kingdom and complaining about their “holiday from hell”.
The family, dubbed “the unruly tourists” by Kiwi media, have been accused of trashing a beach, running out on a cafe bill, trashing an apartment and stealing a journalist’s phone, The Sunreports.
Their alleged conduct was so badthat the Mayor of Auckland — New Zealand’s largest city — labelled them “trash” and “worse than pigs”.

The Doran clan touched down at Heathrow Terminal 3 at 6.40am on Sunday local time, according to the Daily Mail, and tried to hide their faces before downing cans of Red Bull.
Patriarch Larry told the Mail Online the family had done nothing wrong on the trip.
“We’ve been tortured, we’ve been condemned,” he said.
“It’s lies, they’ve condemned us. We’ve been hiding in the mountains for two days.”

Larry voiced again that the family went to see the Hobbits and scenery from Lord of the Rings.
The family’s treatment was so bad Larry told the Daily Mail he would be “going to the (British) Citizens Advice people” and the “human rights people”.
The family arrived in New Zealand January 11, and it didn’t take long before the four adult Dorans were served with 28-day deportation liability notices.

Another member of the group aged 26, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged and bailed from Auckland District Court for assault with a weapon, reckless driving, and fraud by dishonestly using a document.
He has been bailed until February.
A member of the family, Tina Marie Cash, who is seven months pregnant, appeared in court after being arrested for stealing four cans of Red Bull from a service station.

The group revoiced a claim they made to Kiwi media outlet Newshub, that their arrival was after a lot of the offences they are accused of took place.
Joe Doran — sarcastically nicknamed Honest John — actually resorted to dying his hair blonde to avoid being recognised during the later part of the holiday.
The Dorans said they got accused of leaving rubbish on a beach which wasn’t theirs.

After the notorious beach rubbish incident, Larry said, the whole country was after him, with one Kiwi even supposedly trying to run him off the road.
He was referring to people distracting him by calling his family “gyspy scum”, causing him to crash into a kerb, setting off the airbags.
The family abandoned the vehicle and souvenir hunters stripped the rental car of its number plates, tax sticker and keys, apparently left in the ignition.

At one point as the family tried to cover their faces, Larry threatened a camera man: “I’ll break your bones. I’ll break your camera.”
The group of around 12 included brothers John and David Johnson, their partners, children, and mother, Eileen Doran, of Liverpool.
In a radio interview, Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said: “I’ve asked the council to follow up because I want to see them loaded with an infringement fine for trashing our country. They shouldn’t even be here.”
The statements have led to the family threatening legal action against the mayor.
