A recent encounter shared by a woman’s granddaughter brought about much shock and rage amongst Singaporeans who came across it.
In a social media post, granddaughter Evelyn Tan wrote that her elderly grandmother was robbed and drugged while she was at a polyclinic.
While the elderly woman was visiting the doctor at the polyclinic, an unknown man cheated her into taking pills. After taking what she thought was medication, she was robbed of her gold necklace wedding ring, wallet and even house keys.
After she left the polyclinic, the elderly woman collapsed because of the drugs she was given and she was sent to the Accident & Emergency ward at the National University Hospital.

Shockingly, Evelyn wrote, “The audacious thief also located where my grandma lives using the address on her IC and appeared at the doorsteps of my uncle’s flat. He tried to break into the house with my grandma’s keys, but did not succeed as my cousin was at home”.
The robber, a man in his 50s, was then caught. Evelyn wrote that according to the police, her grandmother was not the only victim.
Also cautioning others to being wary, she wrote “Please warn any elderly folks at home of such pricks lurking around hospital and clinics who impersonate nurse or clinicians and hoax them into taking medications that are likes of sleeping pills or relaxants. When in doubt, always ask to speak to the doctor before taking the medication”.
The police have said that the suspect in a theft case that spread on social media after it was posted on Facebook has already been arrested and charged.
In response to queries from The Straits Times, a police spokesman said: “Between Aug 31 and Sept 9, the police were alerted to a case of theft and misappropriation of property along Queensway, and a case of theft along Jurong East Ave 1.”
The spokesman added that a 58-year-old man was arrested on Sept 10 in relation to the cases, and charged two days later, on Sept 12.
