The professional examination cheating syndicate was run by a former medical doctor.
A 29-year-old doctorate degree holder in central China has been arrested for her alleged involvement in an examination cheating syndicate, according to Chinese media reports.
The unidentified woman, from Xianning in Hubei province, was found sitting a professional medical examination in the Hubei city of Huangshi last week on behalf of a medical doctor from Sichuan province, China Youth Daily reported.
She was discovered by an examiner who noticed that she appeared older than the age specified on the doctor’s identification documents.
Police investigations revealed that the woman was promised up to 60,000 yuan (HK$71,300) for passing the exam, which a middleman, surnamed Yan, had arranged for her to sit.
Yan, a former medical doctor, allegedly quit his job in 2013 to start a professional examination cheating ring to help others pass their medical doctor qualification exams.
The medical doctor from Sichuan turned herself in to police three days after her substitute was caught, and testified against Yan.
China’s criminal code states that examination cheats face jail time of between three and seven years.
