A heated argument between passengers escalated into a mid-air brawl on a four-hour AirAsia X flight from Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia to Chengdu, China on the evening of Jul. 21.

The fight reportedly broke out after a man confronted a group of women onboard for "talking loudly" after cabin lights were dimmed, according to Daily Mail and The New York Post.

Flight data indicated that at 6:11pm on Jul. 21, AirAsia X flight D7326 departed KL for Chengdu, in the Sichuan province, and landed at 10:13pm.

AirAsia X, the long-haul subsidiary of budget carrier AirAsia, told Mothership that authorities were notified of the incident, and met the aircraft when it landed in Chengdu to take action.

Argument started over passengers talking loudly: Witness

Viral footage of the fight onboard the aircraft showed that the cabin lights had switched on after the argument started.

A woman in green wearing a white cap was seen climbing over a seat to punch a man seated in front repeatedly.

The man was seen trying to avoid her blows, as flight crew tried to separate them.

The passengers involved were subsequently ushered back to their seats.

Another passenger who witnessed the fight told ViralPress that an argument started after the male passenger asked the women to be quiet as he wanted to sleep.

But the women refused, so the man called them "stupid" and told them to "shut up", the passenger said.

The passenger added that two women in the group supposedly retaliated by attacking the man, before cabin crew took charge and defused the situation.

Police were waiting at the airport in Sichuan to question those involved in the brawl, Daily Mail reported.

The Airport Public Security Bureau of the Sichuan Provincial Public Security Department has reportedly launched an investigation.

AirAsia X statement

In response to Mothership's queries, AirAsia X confirmed that an altercation occurred between guests onboard flight D7326 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Chengdu, China.

"The cabin crew acted swiftly and professionally to manage the situation in line with established safety protocols," said the airline.

According to the airline, local authorities were notified and they met the aircraft upon landing to ensure appropriate action was taken.

The incident did not impact the return flight schedules or disrupt operations.

The airline said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward any behaviour that may affect the comfort, safety, or experience of others onboard.

It also reminded all guests to be respectful throughout their journey.
