Cycling, easily being up to 6x more energy efficient than walking or running (and even more efficient with any additional loads carried), is probably humanity's only survival solution in light of global warming, since by some estimates, city dwellers coincidentally also currently overuse 6x the resources available on earth. This situation naturally results in multiple man made conflicts and disasters like wars over resources which are then wastefully squandered, floods, droughts and landslides destroying property and life- by some accounts, even cutting down trees increases the strength of typhoons multifold. Individuals need to look into themselves to have examplary lifestyles for others to follow, otherwise, the future of humanity is doubtlessly bleak, as the earth runs out of natural resources and human pollution (carbon etc al) holds itself hostage. The Earth is a living organism capable of healing itself, in return for a cancer producing excessive carbon emissions, ground water extractions to the extent the Earth now suffers a fever (global warming), for which more hydration is the key to keep this cancer in check (Antarctic ice caps melting to curb human society expansion by flooding their dwellings and making their crops die).
So if humans wish to continue to thrive on Earth, it's important to see the big picture, that the Earth itself is an organism with feelings and ambitions as well too.
Let this tragedy on Singapore roads (possibly involving an international group of actors) not be wasted, let us all reflect upon ourselves, about our consumerism and it's impact on the Earth which is the only home for us all.
