In just a day, a man who passed himself off as a Thai monk pocketed $2,000.

He had gone around Singapore selling religious pendants and begging for money from passers-by.

Venerable Chao Khun Rian from the Thai Buddhist Temple in Singapore yesterday used this incident, which happened six years ago, to highlight how lucrative it can be for men passing themselves off as monks.

At least five fake monks have been reported to the Singapore Buddhist Federation in the last two weeks, prompting the federation to call for a press conference yesterday morning.

Singapore Buddhist Federation secretary-general Venerable Seck Kwang Phing said: “These bogus monks and nuns are foreigners. As long as the public does not support them by giving them money, they won’t come (here)."

the word MONK should not even be used to describe the cheat...

a monk is supposed to be honest, truthful and clean....

wearing the robe does not mean that he is a monk.

difficult question. the monk is not supposed to beg for money, but nothing is said about a non-monk begging for money. they allow others to earn merit. :*: unless they are earning the wrong merit

deception is a separate issue. the penal code can deal with it.

If a guy from this forum named Wong Monk Monk comes and begs you for money then turn him down. He is a fake Monk.

Fake monks not sure but Fat monks many.

if the media used the word MONK, it is very misleading...

it's better to use the word cheat caught begging or cheating in casino...

what is the reason for using the word MONK in such instances ? to create more controversy? to cast aspersions on monks in general?

I think Mr Wong is a lawyer and a very respectable and knowledgeable forummer here. I don't think he is the type who will beg for anything. He can stand on his own two feet and certainly he has a strong straight spine. Don't make fun of Mr Wong. He is an honest man.
