NEW DELHI: For the first time since their launch in 2010, Google has unveiled two Nexus smartphones at the same time, one featuring a 5.2-inch display and the other sporting a 5.7-inch screen.

At an event in San Francisco, Google announced that it has partnered with Huawei and LG to make the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones, respectively. The former will cost $379, whereas the latter will be available for $499; both will be up for preorder starting next today in the US and next week in other markets. There was no word on the India launch of the two smartphones.

The all-new Nexus 6P has a 5.7-inch AMOLED display with QHD (1440x2560p) resolution and comes with the integrated Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor on the back. The smartphone is reportedly powered by Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB RAM and comes in three storage variants: 32, 64 and 128GB; there is no support for storage expansion.

The smartphone has a 12.3MP rear camera (1.55micron sensor which captures more light, thus delivering better lowlight photos) that supports 4K recording and can capture videos at 240 frames per second; it is backed by a dual-LED flash. On the front is an 8MP camera, the highest resolution for selfie camera for a Nexus smartphone yet. The smartphone features an all-metal, 7.33mm thick body in white, grey and aluminium finishes, packs a 3,450mAh battery, and comes with front-facing stereo speakers.

Nexus 5X has a 5.2-inch screen with relatively lower Full HD (1080x1920p) resolution and runs on the 64-bit Snapdragon 808 processor with 2GB RAM. The storage capacities of the smartphone are 16GB and 32GB, with no microSD card support.

The 12.3MP camera of Nexus 5X also has a 1.55micron sensor and is backed by a laser autofocus for faster capturing; it can shoot videos in high-resolution 4K videos as well 120fps videos. Google said the smartphone will come with a Smart Burst feature that captures shots at 30fps, and can be used to create GIF images. Available in black, white and blue colours, the smartphone has a 2,700mAh battery.

Both smartphones sport the reversible Type C USB and supports fast-charging; the Nexus 6P charges twice as fast as iPhone 6S Plus, Google said. Android Marshmallow will be preloaded on both Nexus models.

Talking about the fingerprint sensor, Google said it will be built right into Android; named Nexus Imprint, it can recognize fingerprints in less than 600 milliseconds. This means that it can not only unlock the handset, but also works with other apps; it also authenticates app downloads in Play Store and payments in Android Pay.

The new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones will have an integrated Android Sensor Hub that Google said will track "sensor fusion, activity recognition, gesture recognition, movements and low power times." A use-case Google spoke was that Android Sensor Hub will track when you pick up the handset and turn on the ambient display automatically.

On the software side, Google said it has reduced the number of preloaded apps, and has made uninstalling apps easier as well.

Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are the first smartphones to get Android's new Google Now on Tap feature, which delivers information to users based on what they are using on screen.

Google and Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies jointly introduced the Nexus 6P, a smartphone featuring Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google’s latest operating system for mobile devices, in San Francisco on Tuesday (local time).

The device also features a new fingerprint scanner, Nexus camera and and improved version of Google's Now on Tap personal assistant, the companies said in a joint statement.

On the same day, the US search giant rolled out the 5.2-inch Nexus 5X, an upgrade of its Nexus 5 with long-term partner LG, as a more affordable sub-flagship device, according to media reports.

But the 6P sets a new precedent for Google as it has created an equal partnership with fast-growing Chinese smartphone maker Huawei, which is responsible for the hardware.

A third party will take care of manufacturing in China, said Huawei, which became the world’s third-biggest smartphone company by sales last month, according to research firm Gartner, following Samsung and Apple.

Google’s Hiroshi Lockheimer hailed the new partnership, describing the 6P as “our most premium phone yet” and Marshmellow as “our highest-performing OS ever”.

It takes aim at the top end of the market, comes hot on the heels of the newly released iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, and is available for pre-order as of this week.

Crafted from aeronautical-grade anodised aluminium with diamond chamfers encircling its edges, the 6P has a 5.7-inch WQHD AMOLED display (2560 x 1440 and 518ppi) and Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.

Its 8-megapixel front facing camera features Google’s HDR+ technology, equipping the phone with one of the best cameras in the market for taking selfies, the companies said.

The 6P is can also record 4K video, including those shot at a high frame rate in slow motion, as the Type-C fast charger that is included provides up to seven hours’ battery life from a 10-minute charge.

It is faster and more secure when used in conjunction with Nexus Imprint, a fingerprint reader positioned on the back of the device. One touch turns the device on and unlocks the apps.

For users in the US, Imprint will also work with Android Pay for quick and easy purchases at thousands of locations nationwide.

“Huawei is very excited to collaborate with Google and deliver a premium Nexus experience for the global market,” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.

“We value the way consumers embrace mobile technology in all parts of their lives and we have created a smartphone with great design, performance and seamless integration of (Marshmallow).”

The model comes in a choice of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB options in either aluminium, graphite (black) or frost (white).

It was available for pre-order in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan via Google Store from Tuesday at a price of US$499 (32GB), US$549 (64GB) and US$649 (128GB).

The equivalent price range in Hong Kong is HK$4,688 to HK$5,688.

Its release comes just days after the launch of the latest iPhones, which feature Force Touch technology and a popular new Live Photos function that records the moments just before and after an image is taken, including sound.

The 6S went on sale last Friday in the US, China, the UK and nine other countries. It can be had for as little as US$200 in some markets with a commitment to a two-year wireless contract.

The Nexus 6P may not have been quite as highly anticipated, but once the news broke reviewers were eager to see whether Huawei, known for its cheaper models in the Chinese market, could rise to the challenge.

Early this month, it released its latest flagship Mate S phone with a 5.5-inch display, a 13-megapixel rear camera and fingerprint security.

Google partnered with Korean technology giant LG on the Nexus 5 but the model suffered negative reviews when customers complained about frequent glitches, giving the 6P some repair work to do in terms of restoring the brand’s credentials.

With a partnership to make one of Google’s flagship Nexus smartphones, Chinese tech giant Huawei is gaining new prominence which could help its efforts to win broader global consumer appeal.

Huawei was tapped this week to produce the Nexus 6P, one of two handsets unveiled this week by Google to showcase its Android mobile operating system.

The large-screen “phablet” was unveiled as a rival to the iPhone 6S Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note. A second Google phone, the Nexus 5X, will be made by South Korea’s LG.

At a time when Chinese firms are struggling to break the dominance of Apple and Samsung on the high end of the smartphone market, the partnership is a milestone for Huawei.

“Clearly, working with Google is vote of confidence in the technology of the product,” said Ian Fogg, senior director at the consultancy IHS Technology.

Fogg said the Nexus devices “are intended to be showcases of the best of Android technology, and are designed to be seen as innovation leaders. That’s an incredibly valuable association to have.”

The deal with Google “opens up a route into the US market to raise visibility for Huawei smartphones,” Fogg noted.

“Huawei will be particularly pleased if this can be a bridgehead into the US market.”

Fogg said that this also helps Google, which is largely absent from China, should the US company decide to dive back into the large market.

“In its home market of China, Huawei has both mobile operator relationships as well as its own expertise in selling smartphones direct to consumers,” Fogg said.

Huawei has been selling some unlocked high-end devices direct to US and European consumers, and has a share of the prepaid, low-end smartphone market along with Chinese rival ZTE.

But Huawei and other Chinese makers have generally lacked the appeal of Apple and Samsung for high-end smartphone customers.

The association with Google “provides a brand boost for Huawei,” noted Avi Greengart, who follows mobile technology at the research firm Current Analysis.

“If you are buying a Nexus phone and it has a Chinese brand prominently displayed, that’s definitely a positive.”

Greengart noted that consumers will be looking at more options now that many US carriers are “unbundling” the service from the device.
