Dental Cavities to be a Thing of the Past?

Oral health and good teeth are very important to our overall well being, but unfortunately, dental cavities are a fact of life for most of us and especially so for people who consume significant amounts of sugar, in any form - and that's most of us, if we're honest. Enter a new molecule that scientists have discovered which actually makes teeth cavity proof and may change dental care forever. They have named it the rather unscientific-sounding, but marketing-friendly Keep 32, because we have 32 teeth. So, what's this molecule's big party trick? It can kill the bacteria that produce cavities in 60 seconds flat!

"Jose Córdoba—a researcher at Yale University—and Erich Astudillo—from the Universidad de Santiago, Chile—claim that this molecule can be added to any dental care product, from toothpaste to mouthwash. In fact, they say it can be added to anything, even candies and chewing gum", reports Gizmodo.

All the user has to do is keep the product in the mouth for one minute and it will eliminate the dreadful Streptococcus Mutans bacteria which causes cavities, making teeth cavity proof for several hours. A truly amazing result and one that dentists all over may be cursing as they see their volume of business significantly reduces. This wonder molecule should be finding its way into products in around 14-18 months.

They started the research in 2005 and now they are aiming to have this product in the market in 14 to 18 months. Once they go through human safety trials in the United States, they want to license the patent to dental care manufacturers like Colgate or Procter & Gamble, as well as companies like Hershey's or Cadbury.

Keep 32 molecule discovered, kills the bacteria that causes tooth decay

If you enjoy eating sugar-filled food, then you likely dread that trip to the dentist. Lots of sugar can end up meaning painful tooth cavities unless you take extra care and brush and floss at least twice a day.

A new molecule has been discovered that might make tooth cavities a thing of the past, though. One thing is for sure: it’s going to have a few dentists worried about their careers.

It’s not actually sugar that causes cavities, it’s the bacteria Streptococcus Mutans. This bacteria metabolizes the sugar in your mouth and turns it into lactic acid which then attacks your tooth enamel. When that happens your teeth become vulnerable to decay and cavities can form. So, if you remove Streptococcus Mutans from the equation you stop the decay from happening.

Jose Cordova, a researcher at Yale University, along with Erich Astudillo from the University of Chile, have discovered a new molecule called Keep 32 that kills Streptococcus Mutans. The pair already have a patent pending and now want to begin human trials to prove it works. That should take no more than 18 months if they find funding.

If successful, Keep 32 could make its way into toothpaste and other tooth care products, but it could also be added to food to stop the bacteria from causing damage at the time of eating.

If Keep 32 works as described, you can guarantee there will be a lot of interest from the dental and food industries, and in particular companies that currently provide tooth care products. Hopefully one of them doesn’t acquire the patent and shelve it so as to ensure we all keep buying toothpaste and going to the dentist for repair work.

Soon, there may be new way to prevent cavities - forever.

Jose Cordoba of Yale University and Erich Astudillo of Universidad de Santiago in Chile have discovered "Keep 32," a new chemical that may be able to keep your pearly whites pristine. Named after the 32 teeth in the human mouth, Keep 32 was able to get rid of all the bacteria that causes cavities in just 60 seconds, according to the Daily Mail.

The Chilean website Diario Financiero Online reports that the pair of researchers have been working since 2005 on finding the perfect formula. They have a provisional patent on the molecule and are looking for funding for their proposed 14 to 18-month human trials. They believe the product can earn $300 million in revenue within the first five years of operation.

"The molecule can not only be incorporated into a gum, but in products like toothpastes, mouthwashes, dental floss, candies, lollipops, dental night gel and others who items that can be kept inside the mouth for at least 60 seconds," Erich Astudillo, CEO of Top Tech Innovations, the company that holds the patent, said to DF.cl.

This isn't the first product in development that researchers hope will make that trip to the dentist more pleasant. "Smart bomb" mouthwash, which was created by UCLA researchers, also showed promise in eliminating tooth decay by getting rid of the S. mutans bacteria, the main cause of tooth decay, for the entire four-day duration of the study.

Tooth decay and cavities are certainly a problem. A report out in March 2012 said that more preschoolers were showing up to dentists with 10 or more cavities, while a more recent one in May said that one in five Americans have an untreated cavity.

Astudillo said he hopes to license the chemical to companies that produce dental hygiene products like Colgate or Proctor and Gamble or candy companies like Hershey's or Cadbury.

However, Smart Planet points out that the molecule may be classified as an antibiotic. In this case, the researchers would have to prove that the it can be used in a variety of methods without many health consequences, similar to fluoride.

Still, the researchers are optimistic, telling to DF.cl that they are already in talks with five companies.

New chemical makes teeth 'cavity proof' - and could do away with dentist visits forever

A new chemical could make human teeth 'cavity proof' - and do away with the need for visits to the dentists forever.

The molecule has been called 'Keep 32' - after the 32 teeth in a human mouth.

The chemical was designed by dentists in Chile, and wipes out all the bacteria that cause cavities in just 60 seconds in tests.

The chemical could be added to any current dental care product, turning toothpaste, mouthwash and chewing gum into 'super cleansers' that could get rid of the underlying cause of tooth decay.

The chemical targets 'streptococcus mutans', the bacteria that turns the sugar in your mouth into lactic acid which erodes tooth enamel.

By exterminating the bacteria, 'Keep 32' prevents the damage to teeth before it happens.

Using a product containing the chemical keeps your teeth 'cavity proof' for several hours.

The product has been under test for seven years, and is now going into human trials.

It could be on the market in 14 to 18 months, say researchers José Córdoba from Yale University and Erich Astudillo from the University of Chile.

The chemical could even be added to foods to stop bacteria damaging teeth as you eat.

The researchers hope to licence the patent to chemical giants such as Procter and Gamble.

'We are currently in talks with five interested in investing in our project or buy our patent,' say the researchers

Irony -dentists might not look at this in same light? Like mine who always preach, no snacks no nothing. Almost tempted to tell him (in between drill work and gargels) -if so, less visits:p

The same way how doctors tell you not to take too much sugar, fast foods, etc... but still people are having heart problems, arthritis, obesity, and what nots.
