Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine first UK recipients detail experiences
Some recipients in UK said they felt 'privileged'

Following breaking reports early Tuesday that a 90-year-old woman became the first person in the U.K. to receive Pfizer’s recently approved coronavirus jab, additional vaccine recipients have come forward to share their experiences.

The first person, Margaret Keenan, said she felt “privileged” to get the vaccine, and the second individual, 81-year-old William Shakespeare of Warwickshire, said he was “pleased” and that staff was “wonderful,” per the BBC.

Around 800,000 doses of the vaccine were expected to be in place for the start of the immunization program on Tuesday, a day that Health Secretary Matt Hancock has dubbed “V-Day,” a nod to triumphs in World War II. The first doses will go to nursing home staff and people over age 80 as well as health and social care workers, according to the NHS website.

The initial wave of vaccinations on Tuesday involves 50 hospitals around England, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will also begin their vaccination rollouts the same day.

A 28-year-old nurse named Joanna Sloan received the first vaccination in Northern Ireland several hours after Keenan at Royal Victoria Hospital, per the outlet.

“I’ve been waiting, looking forward to it for so long and it feels great, it feels fantastic, privileged,” she said. Sloan will also head the rollout of vaccines in Belfast. The mother of one has been working as a nurse for six years and has put her wedding on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“This feels like the last hurdle towards keeping people safe, myself and everyone around me,” she added.

Others were more apprehensive. Craig Atkins, 48 of Ebbw Yale, became the first person vaccinated in Wales on Tuesday, just a day after the area recorded a spike of 2,000 daily cases.

“It was a bit scary. I was the first to have this here today and it’s a bit of a leap into the unknown,” he told BBC Wales. Atkins works at a care home, has diabetes and has steered away from the flu vaccine in the past.

“I’ve kept my kids off school longer than anybody else. We didn’t want to be in quarantine and we didn’t want to take it into the nursing home,” he said.

Finally, Dr. Katie Stewart, a consultant anesthetist, was among the first health care workers vaccinated in Scotland.

“After a very long hard year looking after patients with COVID and staying apart to protect each other, we finally have something to celebrate,” she said. She added she was “truly delighted” to stand as one the first people in the Scottish borders to receive a vaccine.

And so it begins, COVID is about to be COVIDED. Bye bye COVID.

6 viable vaccines will be available in 2021. Expect to still wear masks until a majority has been inoculated against the virus, but we should be able to reopen the airport, shops, restaurants within a year or so.

Air freight prices 'outrageous' as COVID-19 shots rolled out: WHO expert

GENEVA: Some carriers are seeking "outrageous" prices to fly dry ice and other medical equipment in the pre-holiday rush, but a capacity squeeze should ease in 2021 when the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines is expected, the World Health Organization's logistics chief said on Tuesday (Dec 8).
Distribution of vaccines to low- and middle-income countries will be tricky, due to grounded passenger air services in some places, and may rely on charters, Paul Molinaro, WHO chief of operations support and logistics, told Reuters.
Price inflation has been a growing feature in air freight, with "across the board increases especially since November," Molinaro said.
He cited a price quote just received for a dry ice shipment, needed to cool some lab re-agents, which is around 20 times the norm.
"I just had a quote from a cargo (company) - a big one that shall remain nameless - Dallas (Texas) USA to Sierra Leone, Freetown - at sort of US$105 a kilo, which is outrageous actually," he said. The "normal price" would be US$4-6 per kilo, he said.
Molinaro said a range of factors had driven prices, including a greater than usual pre-Christmas increase in e-commerce as lockdowns keep people at home.
"So we have air freight rates coming out of China going up because of the introduction of the new iPhone, because of the introduction of PlayStation 5 and because of the fact that products are in high demand anyway," he said.

By January, available capacity might increase, he added.
Airline body IATA's chief economist Brian Pearce told reporters on Tuesday that Christmas demand "exaggerates the problem" of soaring cargo rates, which should ease early next year in time for the ramp-up in vaccine shipments. "That's the low season for the cargo business - that will free up a lot of capacity," he said.
HOTSPOTS AND SANCTIONS
The WHO hopes to have half a billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines available for distribution by the global COVAX initiative in the first quarter of 2021, its chief scientist said on Friday.
The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), which is taking the lead on delivering COVID-19 vaccines to developing countries, says it spent US$35-40 million on international vaccine freight in pre-crisis 2019 when it procured 2.43 billion doses for immunisation campaigns against polio and other diseases.
Since then, prices have gone "through the roof," the agency's transport chief Pablo Panadero said. But UNICEF is negotiating lower rates with airlines for the airlift.
WHO may help arrange delivery of COVAX vaccine supplies to hotspots such as Somalia or Yemen or to sanctions-hit Iran or North Korea, Molinaro said.
"It will be areas where it is not necessarily straightforward using the regular passenger/cargo network," he said.
"Syringes will be sea freight, you wouldn't have air capacity to move that, no way," he said.
The WHO is providing technical guidance to all countries on cold chain issues, Molinaro said, noting that the Pfizer vaccine requires storage at minus 70 degrees Celsius.
"We are still in a period with a lot of fog and crystal-ball kind of gazing, which obviously doesn't make this easier.
"There may be a breakthrough vaccine that comes out, big production, 2-8 degrees, and that changes the game," he said.

On the 10th the US FDA will be giving the green light for the Pfizer Covid Vaccine. On the 17th of December the Moderna Vaccine. This is not the same as REGENERON.

tiong virus cannot be solve by vaccine. virus too powerful

this is not true. mRNA Vaccines are effective in against the COVID-19 Virus. Only the United States and Europe have the tech to make these Vaccines. Do not trust or take any China or Russia made vaccine as they are simple 1960s designed "inactivated" or "killed virus" vaccines

Six people died in Pfizer’s late-stage trial of the COVID-19 vaccine, the US Food and Drug Administration has revealed just hours after Britain became the first country in the world to roll out the vaccine.

But the deaths are said to raise no new safety issues or questions about the vaccine’s effectiveness because all represented events that occurred in the general population at a similar rate, the FDA concluded.

Its 53-page briefing report, released on Wednesday morning (Australian time) is the first detailed analysis of the vaccine trial by Pfizer and BioNTech, which found in November that its vaccine was 95 per cent effective in preventing coronavirus infections.

The documents revealed that two people who received the experimental vaccine had died during the trial. Four others who died were on a placebo.

“All deaths represent events that occur in the general population of the age groups where they occurred, at a similar rate,” the report said.

It confirmed the vaccine was, as reported by Pfizer, 95 per cent effective at least seven days after the second injection.

Data shows the vaccine was just 52 percent effective after the first dose.

4 volunteers develop FACIAL PARALYSIS after taking Pfizer Covid-19 jab, prompting FDA to recommend ‘surveillance for cases’

Four trial participants who received the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine experienced facial paralysis, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA said the issue should be monitored as the jab becomes more widely available.
The potentially concerning cases were revealed after the US drug regulator published an analysis of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine ahead of a meeting to consider emergency use authorization for the jab in the United States.
According to the documents, Bell’s palsy, a form of temporary facial paralysis, was reported by four participants during phase 3 trials. The individuals had been administered the jab, and no members of the placebo group experienced similar adverse effects.
The condition resembles a stroke, with most sufferers watching helplessly as one side of their face droops and their muscles go limp. In some rare situations, both sides of the face may become paralyzed. It is unclear what causes Bell’s palsy, although the temporary paralysis usually goes away on its own.

However, the FDA claimed that the frequency of the health issue is “consistent with the expected background rate in the general population,” and added that there was no clear evidence linking the coronavirus vaccine to the unpleasant medical condition. Still, the federal regulator recommended “surveillance for cases of Bell’s palsy with deployment of the vaccine into larger populations.”
The FDA noted the “numerical imbalance” of Bell’s palsy cases among the vaccine and placebo groups, but said there were no other “non-serious adverse events” that showed a similar pattern.
According to the documents, side effects are common but appear to be minor. Out of the trial participants, 84 percent experienced some kind of reaction. After receiving the jab, 63 percent of trial subjects reported fatigue and 55 percent said they suffered from headaches. Chills were reported by 32 percent of participants, 24 percent complained of joint pain and 14 percent developed a fever.
Overall, the jab appears to have received good marks from the FDA. In its report, the regulator said that the two-dose vaccine is about 50 percent effective even after just the first injection. The vaccine is believed to be 95 percent effective after the second dose, administered three weeks later. The FDA also found that the jab reduced the risk of severe Covid-19 symptoms after the first dose.
On Tuesday, the United Kingdom became the first country in the world to begin administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to the general population.

Fuck the other companies out to profit from the vaccine. Support AstraZeneca. You also save money. it is also not the mRNA vaccine.

AstraZeneca: under $4 per dose. Free for early recipients.
AstraZeneca has a $1.2 billion agreement with the U.S. government to supply up to 300 million doses to Americans. That funding also included the money used in the vaccine’s phase 3 trials. So the per-dose price at which the U.S. government has agreed to purchase the vaccine is under $4.

On Monday, AstraZeneca said it will provide vaccines at cost “in perpetuity” to low- and middle-income countries in the developing world.

AstraZeneca is a member of Covax, a global initiative aiming to distribute two billion vaccine doses to 92 low- and middle-income countries at no more than $3 a dose. Neither Pfizer nor Moderna has joined the initiative.

cheap because the so called “more efficacious half-dose” regimen may not even pass scrutiny of uk regulators. they truly screwed it up.
