The only reason singapore capitulated and let in so many foreigners in the first place is to compete with the imminent threat of businesses choosing these other cities for their base.
We sold them the idea of setting up shop here to target consumers from india, china and the rest of asia. Why? Because we have all nationalities living here as a testbed for new products...r& d, manufacturing, plus advertising support. We give them cheap labour...thats what 6.9 million is for and big tax breaks.
We went from being high in the value chain, with amzingly high standards, to the lowest common denominator...just like neighbouring cities. Singapore used to be sold as a place with cleanliness, order and quality of life. All of which have taken a hit. It does not take a sociologist to see this.
