SINGAPORE — An unemployed man who sought to seek justice for another man by hitting a woman was sentenced to nine months’ jail on Thursday (April 26).

The sentence also takes into account a charge for voluntarily causing hurt to a 21-year-old female police officer in a separate incident.

Another charge of disturbing public peace was taken into consideration during sentencing, for a third incident where he got into a fight with two men at a coffee shop.

On July 6 last year, Nadarajan Selva Kumar, 47, punched the nose of his neighbour, Ms Anita Kumar Chanan Singh, 44, who was living on the fifth floor of a housing block on Champions Way in Woodlands.

Ms Chanan Singh was upset that her 73-year-old neighbour, Mr Ng Hock Hwa, who was in a motorised wheelchair, had knocked into some of her items placed at their common corridor. She then blocked his way and started berating at him.

Nadarajan, who stepped in to help Mr Ng with his wheelchair, got so annoyed with Ms Chanan Singh that he got into a shouting match with her, which turned into a scuffle when he shoved her. He later boxed her on her nose and the impact was so forceful that her nasal bone fractured.

Court documents showed that Nadarajan called the police to complain about the victim right after he helped Mr Ng down to the void deck of the block, stating that a woman “was blocking an old man in a wheelchair here. I whacked her already. She fell down. I do not know if she needs ambulance”.

Ms Chanan Singh, whose nose had started to bleed, called for an ambulance herself as she sat down outside her unit.

On Dec 4 last year, Nadarajan again got into a heated exchange with another woman while he was at the void deck of Block 570C, Woodlands Avenue 1.

He called the police at around 1.15pm that day, informing them that a drunk woman was creating problems and shouting vulgarities.

A police officer, Sergeant Nur Dini Hasnen, responded to the call with her partner and arrived to find Nadarajan arguing with a woman while seated at the void deck with another man. They were all consuming alcohol.

Nadarajan refused to tell Sergeant Nur Dini what was happening and kept asking her to question his two acquaintances instead.

However, as she did so, Nadarajan kept interrupting her even though he was advised repeatedly not to intervene.

Later, Nadarajan charged towards his female acquaintance and Sergeant Nur Dini tried to stop him, but he broke free. He then grabbed the officer’s forearm twice, causing her to suffer from a soft tissue injury.

The officer shouted at him to stop and he finally complied.

Nadarajan has had numerous run-ins with the law since 1992. His most serious offence was of voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons in 2012, and he was jailed eight months for that.

For voluntarily causing grievous hurt to Ms Chanan Singh, he could have been jailed up to 10 years.

For voluntarily causing hurt to Sergeant Nur Dini, he could have been jailed up to two years’ jail, or fined up to S$5,000, or both.
