Death of the Army Market

SHOP owners amidst the green wares of the army market are singing the blues.

Ever since the launch of the e-mart credit policy in 1999, our men in green have been opting to use the credits given by the SAF to buy their army essentials from e-marts in camp or online.

This has resulted in shops at the army market seeing an almost 50 per cent dip in sales since 2008.

With the introduction of the new army uniform in 2009 eliminating the need to sew on your rank, shops offering sewing services at the market are facing a decrease in customers as well.

RazorTV checks in on how the iconic army market might be entering its twilight years.

It's sad. I have fond memories of buying army stuff at Beach Road. Guess there's a time for everything, all things come and go. And yes, guess they should have prepared themselves when e-mart was introduced.

Army mart at Beach Road are usually Mom & Pop shops just passing time. These shops does not have the foresight to pre-empt technologies introductions. Compare to the upmarket army marts like Sheares or D&G Marketing for example; they capitalised with the flow and offer more varieties.

Its the same as provision shops back in the old days, when a bigger organisation or supermarts started then ; the end is inadvertible over time for the smaller shops.

It is depressing when you visit the Beach Road marts nowadays. All are eager to sell you something, but it gets so mundane when they can't offer any thing more.

Emart cannot make it la, always out of sizes for most items, cannot even buy an army tee or haversack during ICT. Only left with socks and microfibre towel to buy.

I think the beach road stalls still have their market. Not everyone prefer online purchase. If you go beach road, you can know the sizes and material you are buying. Online purchase is good for...toilet papers, soap, socks, powder. But for shoes and uniform, better buy personally. Besides, whatever that were sold in Beach road stalls, army may not have them ready for sale.
