  Tan Kin Lian asks why Singaporeans are not hired to cut grass​

  Former NTUC Income chief executive Tan Kin Lianrecently posted (13 June) a picture on social media of foreign workers cutting grass, and asked "Why can't locals do this work?"
  
  Tan questioned: "Is it due to low wages, dislike for the sun, long hours or esteem?"
  
  In a follow-up post the next day, the former presidential hopeful said that while he received constructive insights, there were also "quite a few dismissive and arrogant comments."
  
  Tan then gave his take on the topic, explaining how some countries have successfully employed their own citizens for works such as landscaping, construction, and other outdoor jobs.
  
  "They achieve this by offering competitive pay, ensuring safe working conditions, and treating the workers with respect, thereby giving these essential roles the dignity they deserve," Tan said. "We can learn a lot from these countries."
  
  Tan then offered three key reasons why Singapore should reshape these industries to attract local workers.
