Golf course trespasser jailed

THREE young men who trespassed into a golf course at the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) reacted violently when a golfer told them to leave. Vickneswaran Ruvy, 21, then a delivery attendant, punched the golfer, Mr Lawrence Loh, 61, a senior executive with Singapore Press Holdings, who was with three golf buddies at the time, in the face. He also took a golf club from a golf bag on the ground and swung it wildly at the head of Mr Robert Tan, 53, a branding consultant who was with Mr Loh at the time. As a result, Mr Tan had bruises on his head.

Vickneswaran's friend, part-time mover Vinodh Raveendran, 25, also lashed out at the group and kicked Mr Tan on his back. The third person, Muhammad Sidek Syed Furrdin, 19, had been acquitted earlier of a less serious charge of acting aggressively by throwing objects at the four golfers. Yesterday, District Judge Lee Poh Choo sentenced Vickneswaran to 15 months in jail and three strokes of the cane for the attack on Feb 1 last year. He was also jailed for six weeks for an unrelated offence of hurting a female security officer in December of the same year. The sentences will run consecutively. Vinodh was jailed for three months.
