The PAP chooses competent people to begin with so it goes without saying that they can easily get well paid jobs should they not succeed in winning a seat.

The opposition scrapes the bottom of the barrel so failed candidates go back to the bottom the barrel if they fail in politics.

Its not fair to compare like this. The PAP had a stranglehold on both the talented and the idealistic in Singapore up until the after the 2001 GE. A young university student who had potential but who showed a strong anti-establishment inclination could be suddenly paid a house visit by faculty members and other important folk "advising" his parents to rein him in and have him focus on his studies. People who tried to join opposition politics were regularly threatened both at work and at home. The closer the employer was to the establishment, the less tolerance there was for such employees. It was hard for an opposition aspirant to operate effectively as he was blocked in so many ways - socially, economically, even his family. Then you have the more overt means of oppression - media censorship and control, ISA arrests, lawsuits and bankruptcies, etc. Even economists had to toe the line when speaking of economic forecasts and that was no secret.

The opposition has only a decade or so thus far to remake itself and begin attracting talented people. WP is the furthest ahead in the pack so far, and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future unless the other parties decide to swallow the bitter pill and do the necessary overhauling. The opposition is no longer scraping the bottom of the barrel. GE 2011 brought in some real talents, and GE 2016 will definitely see more talents showing.

The PAP on the other hand is finding it harder to attract talents because the good ones know the structural defects in the party and its policies, stay away to protect their own reputations. Increasingly the PAP only attract the the flippant, the mediocre, the lackadaisical, and the ambivalent. Within the next two GEs if they don't change, they will be the ones scraping the bottom while the opposition will have a field day cherry picking eager young talented candidates to field.

Well guys, the main story here isn't GMS.

The main story is Nicole Seah describing her meltdown in public. Why the fuck is she doing that? She is killing her political career.

She may be a general in NSP instead of a foot soldier in WP. At the very least she is a colonel. But being a colonel is a lot of hard work and very stressful.

How did you read from her article that she had a melt-down?

She is just saying she had a bad 2013. Doesn't she has her right to share her feelings with us?

I had a very bad 2013 too. In fact, lost my job and I lost my gf and I lost $150,000 on penny stocks. So, 2013 was a bad year for me.

Did I have a melt-down? Of course not, silly.

You may be talking about yourself but I certainly wouldn't want to put up with shit for a measly million bucks over 4 years.

Tin Pei Ling has a higher calling and that is to help the people of Singapore. That's why she ignores the criticism and simply gets on with the job at hand.

PAP politicians won't survive a day in the US political landscape. In fact, Tin Pei Ling would be a bigger laughing stock than Sarah Palin. And LHL will make George W. Bush a brilliant. More likely alot of those PAP politicians will be in jail. The minister who stole toothpicks would have resigned and the Minister Great Fu would be lampooned in Saturday Night Live and other late night talk shows for weeks.

Well in the US the standards for being able to conduct yourself are higher. But the standards for being able to run your govt are lower. If in Singapore you had a health care website operating the way that it operated in the US, the minister of health would have been - well not fired but rotated out to a lesser appointment.

In the US, it would not have been possible for a Nicole Seah to write on Facebook that she had a meltdown. Yes, the last two US presidents abused drugs in their youth: Dubya was an alcoholic and Barack Obama has taken cocaine before, and is an ex-smoker. But you can only write about these things when they took place a long time ago. You can be hospitalised for stress attacks but if you were to go online and write a long blog entry about it, you would have been trolled to pieces.

I'm fairly sure NSP will respond the way WP has responded to all of GMS's rants...
By completely ignoring him.
Which is the right thing to do. Outside of this forum and maybe a couple of other niche forums, hardly anyone knows who GMS is. Why respond and draw attention to him in the media?

WP's case with NSP's is different. WP was attacked by PAP and GMS was also attacking the same areas. Hence, when WP addressed the allegations it could address the PAP and voters and erase GMS from existence.

For NSP, these are fresh allegations appearing for the first time and they come from one of the formerly top 4 men in NSP. There is no need to always respond to GMS but to do one-time-off for fresh allegations. This is to balance between giving someone too much attention and allowing certain allegations to take root. (LTK addressed GMS once to clear the air over the Tampines GRC issue.)

Non-comment for this case gives the impression that the group had indeed been overly-ambitious. This story also emerged during the group's adventures with RP and WP.

It's her choice of words that is a melt-down. My heart literally melted when I read what she went through and felt like rushing to her side to cuddle her.

She doesn't need cuddling. What she needs is a kick in the ass and spurs stuck into her hide.

I don't agree with so much of what LeongSam wrote, and you know, I know that he doesn't believe it either.

But this is the truth. She needs to get her ass kicked.

Today a lot of people will be nice to her, asking her to be strong, and everything sounds good now. In 2016, the PAP candidate running against her will be asking everybody if they want to vote for a woman who had a meltdown. This is not the end but it is a big big setback.

I am also going to be asking: what the fuck is NSP doing. How can NSP have a system by which the most visible person can just write something like that on her Facebook and not have it vetted by a second person. She should have said, "I've been working very hard and I need a rest." That is almost true. She should not have given any evidence of her mental frailty.

What Nicole Seah is going through, for those of you who are interested in psychology, is a classic case of the imposter syndrome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impostor_syndrome

I will still vote for her if she stands in my ward because she has shown her self to be a person with a very big heart. She has brains, charisma, a good heart, is willing to work hard. Almost everything. But what we now know is that she does not have ruthlessness. I worry about her political career because being a politician, and being an opposition MP means that you have to be a warrior every day and keep on bashing away at the PAP. You need to be a little cold blooded to do that.

It's those MPs and Ministers that need a kick in the butt and spurs up their groins. Nicole is not even an elected member of parliament.
Why should she answer to the country-men. She only needs to answer to her family and loved ones.

Fact that she is forthright to share her plight and predicament is testimony that her heart and soul is in the right place. That is all that matters for now.

Limpeh wrote all that for the benefit of people who can read. People who know that m-e-l-t-d-o-w-n spells meltdown.

It wasn't for you.

In other news, thank goodness Nicole Seah was the target of a vilification campaign. Now everybody's going to talk about how she got victimised by the mainstream media, which is a good thing. Because everybody needs to get distracted from her very public stress attack.

Thanks for the link.

Agree with you that her latest message on her FB, against the SPH, is a good thing. You go girl, Nicole!

I like Nicole. The other young lady that I (personally) would like to see in politics is Ms Rachel Zeng.

The young SDP man I'd like to see standing in an SMC is Clarence Zeng Ziting. He has promise and potential.

She did not meltdown. If she had, you can all lick her juices, which obviously you can't. That shows clearly her choice of words is just to emode and be intimate with the readers. This is how most girls write in their diaries.

Now she need real cock not poli-cocking.

Politican is like a coconut tree. At first they grow straight. Soon they start to sway left or right, and some even bend over or under. Finally they grow nuts.

Well we can agree that it is about her choice of words. Meltdown doesn't mean melt down. Literally it means that something has gone wrong with a nuclear power plant. When it is used on a human being it means that a person has a nervous breakdown.

She is a popular person. Girls can relate to her and the guys want to lick her juices. But in politics saying that you have a meltdown is very dangerous. What I did not mind about her diary entry was she told everybody how hard she was working for the people. But when you are saying you have a meltdown, it is very dangerous, because people can sympathise with you and then after that doubt your ability to be an MP. I cannot think of a politician who can say that she has a meltdown, and it does not affect her in a bad way.

Governor Howard Dean was about to be considered seriously for presidential nomination in 2004, but there was one conference where he started to scream into the mike. It was called a "meltdown" and his chance was gone. That speech was called "I have a scream". In American politics, you don't use the word "meltdown" unless you're trying to explain why your political enemy is not suitable for office.

I just think her choice of words is very bad because if she simply said "life has been very tough for me recently" it would have been perfectly OK.

In politics there is a right way to emote. (It is emote not emode.) You can emote "I tried but I failed", or "why is my opponent so evil" or "there is so much injustice in the world". But you cannot emote "this is too much for me and I cannot cope with all my own problems" because if you can't solve your own problems how can you solve other peoples' problems? So what if this is what little girls write in their diaries? Nicole Seah may be a "little girl" but she will enter parliament - if at all - as a fully grown woman who is a tough warrior who will take on the PAP.

We all know how capable she is, which is why I'm surprised she made such a basic mistake.
