In a short video, the member of the Bundestag, Helge Lindh, congratulates the German Muslims on breaking fast. This provides ridicule.

Helge Lindh has once again caused mixed reactions with his holiday greetings in social media." IMAGO / IPON
The SPD politician Helge Lindh has described the sugar festival as one of the “most important religious festivals in Germany today”, which traditionally heralds the end of Muslim Lent. The self-pronated “Datteldude” smiles at the camera and wishes the Muslim fellow citizens “wonderful pleasures”. The holiday greetings belong to the standard programme of the member of the Bundestag, who repeatedly puts the short videos on certain occasions on the Internet.

Lusing theatre as a political programme?

The reactions of the community are very different. Some congratulate and thank Lindh for his open words, the majority sees in the videos criticised as artificially criticised above all the attempt to win Muslim voters to the SPD. Especially on X (formerly Twitter), the social democrat reaps above all Häme, a user writes, for example: “He is like the child, which was never elected and somehow absolutely wants to belong to it. Only a few days ago, Lindh had caused a stir in the Bundestag when he reproduced a series of stereotypes about right-wing conservative people in an acting speech as AfD voters.

A celebration of blessing

The Sugar Festival is one of the most important festivals in the Muslim year. It starts with a special morning prayer and the exchange of greetings and sweets. The families eat together, the children get gifts and new clothes. The festival is characterized by shared meals and cultural events that celebrate the diversity of the Muslim community. The Muslim teaching also demands special support for those in need during this time. However, this charity is primarily aimed at believing Muslims. To what extent the Muslim communities in Germany feel addressed by Lindh's presentation can therefore only be assumed.
