In an announcement made by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, the Singapore government has finally decided to pay for basic life and personal accident insurance coverage for active conscripts (NSFs and active NS men).

Previously, insurance have to be paid for by the NSF conscripts who themselves draw only a meager S$450 monthly allowance. In addition to the free insurance, Minister Ng Eng Hen also announced that the Singapore army will reward conscripts who do well with gift vouchers.

Singapore is a US$300 billion economy and it’s Ministers are the most well-paid in the world. However, the country’s wealth is not distributed to National Service conscripts who protected the nation and the Singapore government has been known to be exceptionally stingy while NS men and NSFs are treated as bottom feeders with little incentives and harsh punishments.

New citizens enjoy full citizenship rights but are excused National Service. Out of some 100,000 new citizen males who are of eligible age for NS (between 21 to 40), less than 200 signed up for the optional Volunteer Corps (SAFVC).

50 years later, and they finally got down to buying insurance for their conscripts?

LKY must be turning in his urn now. He would have never approved of such a privilege for NS slaves. If not, it would have been implemented donkey years ago while he was still alive.

When giving out insurance, PAP is generous. When WP propose unemployment insurance, it is raiding the reserves and populism.

The devil is in the details. How much is the coverage? What are the limitations?

You can bet that the PAP will find some ways to claw that and more back. That's the PAP way.

For example, if you are willing to extend your MR to 50 years of age in exchange for more incentives.

The FT's will be the first to run....the rest, secretly hide in the bunkers or tunnels that has express train service like El Chapo....all the way to a secret location in Johor facing the sea, with a RSN ship waiting, most likely commandeered by a myRear Admiral....

Free insurance for a dangerous vocation such as being in the armed forces for 2 full years, when u could have been working in the private sector in a comfy air-con office? Shouldn't they have done it long ago?!

Why should PAP/SAF treat NSF so nicely ? I seriously don't understand. Since 70% voted for SAF/PAP to screw their sons and kids, then we should leave it as that.

My time, conscripts are only paid $90 a month. Yet they arranged NTUC Income to come suck $30+ off for minimum insurance coverage, paid out of the conscripts' $90!

Rewards? Yes too.....priority Q to have a meal in cookhouse! Same uncooked/overcooked, sandy shit and you need wash your own dog tray!

why is there even a need for insurance in the first place? All incidents resulting in death or injury should already be the responsibility of MINDEF.

by providing insurance to all NSF, is mindef out sourcing this risk to a 3rd party? if it saves money for the tax payers, then its a good thing.

also, does this mean mindef will not need to pay out any compensation to injured servicemen? it falls upon the injured servicemen to file their own claims (which may or may not be approved)

i would have expected a decent debate on this in parliament considering the wide reaching effects of this decision on so many lives.

Lets see if the WP, a so called Opposition will bring tis issue up in Parliament or they will hide and turn a blind eye!
