The PAP is setting aside $1 billion for the development of tourism in Singapore. Since this industry is heavily dominated by FTs (hotel workers, casino workers, F & B workers are predominantly FTs) how much of this money will actually benefit Singaporeans?
The government has set aside S$1 billion for the Tourism Development Fund to help upgrade the sector in Singapore, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Friday.
Making the announcement during the grand opening of the new wildlife park River Safari, he said the amount will be used to help develop new tourism concepts, fund new events for leisure and businesses, as well as upgrade the entire industry.
The amount the government has set aside is much higher than the previous S$905 million pumped into the fund in 2012 and PM Lee encouraged companies and workers to “take full advantage” of the schemes under this fund.
Underlining the importance of refreshing the attractions and events in Singapore to keep the city-state as a relevant must-see destination, he said” consumers’ tastes will change, facilities and attractions will age and competitors are stepping up their game – opening new attractions, organising new events”.
PM Lee also announced the Ministry of Trade and Industry will be conducting studies to give workers with more skills, knowledge and courtesies to do well in what he deems as a “high-touch industry”.
“While technology has helped to overcome manpower constraints, it can never fully replace the warmth of people-to-people interaction”, he said, adding that Singapore needs to complement the “hardware with good software”.
He used the Formula One race in September last year as an example. He explained that while the main highlight of the event was the race, there were supporting events organised around it to make sure that there was “something for everyone”, such as the Rihanna concert.
He said this strategy will be extended to more tourist attractions and events.
