WE REFER to the letter 'Is the population of Singapore citizens shrinking?' on Thursday. Mr Michael Eng asked about the growth rate and number of Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents in 2006 and last year, and whether the population of Singapore citizens is shrinking.

The number of Singapore citizens has been growing. Last year, the number of Singapore citizens stood at 3.13 million, about 0.8 per cent higher than the 3.11 million recorded in 2006. The number of permanent residents was 0.45 million last year, an increase from 0.42 million in 2006.

Know a PR who was born in Spore & when they called him up for NS he asked people for advise on whether he should do NS. Everyone including his Sporeans friends advised him against doing NS!!

Bullshit! The no. of citizens is close to 2M, with 500k abroad. The 3.13M propbably includes those in the columbaria!

To clarify - A baby born in Singapore is not allowed to be a citizen unless one of the parents are citizen. This is a law very unique to SG and just a few other countries. The birth certificate clearly states in heavyset type that this baby 'is NOT a citizen of Singapore at time of birth'.

To clarify - A baby born in Singapore is not allowed to be a citizen unless one of the parents are citizen. This is a law very unique to SG and just a few other countries. The birth certificate clearly states in heavyset type that this baby 'is NOT a citizen of Singapore at time of birth'.

Years ago, I knew a german national who was married to a Spore PR . When she became pregnant, the Spore immigration authorities renewed her visa ONLY after she agreed NOT to seek Spore citizenship for the baby. (Of course she had never any intention to get Sporean citizenship for the child, she eventually settled in Canada)

Currently, Spore is getting very desperate for NSguys lah.
I know of an Indonesian was born in Spore, but has spent most of his life in Indonesia being asked to do NS.

This Indonesian who was born in Spore but has been living & schooling in Indo was sent a letter to do NS! Mother & father are Indonesian, but mother is long time Spore PR. She returned to Spore to have the baby in Spore because she thought Spore had better health facilities.

Watch out PRs the Spore gov't want you for NS

Yeh - NS is different to zhihau's question... just to re-emphasise my answer, babies born in SG can only be citizens at birth if at least one of the parents are already a citizen.
