Bomb scare in city where G7 is being held, firefighters rush to the scene

A BOMB squad has rushed to the scene after an abandoned suitcase triggered a bomb scare in Lucca, Italy, where the G7 is taking place.

Firefighters were at the scene after an abandoned suitcase has triggered a bomb scare in Lucca.

The incident was caused by a student who left a back pack in the plaza and went back to pick it up a few hours later.

The emergency services were alerted at 11:30am in Piazzale Verdi at the ticket off for the CTT transport system.

The bomb squad has detonated the suspicious suitcase and the area has been closed off to the public and fenced off.

Security has increased in the Italian city because of the G7 summit.

Italy has closed the airspace over Lucca province where the group of seven Foreign Ministers Summit is being held today and tomorrow.

The foreign minister and representatives of the G7 group are set to discuss Syria and way to counter the Islamic State terror group.

The meeting will be attended by Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, French Foreign Minister Jean Marc Ayrault, UK Foregn Secretary Boris Johnson, Japan's Fumio Kishida, Canada's Chrystia Freeland and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.
