contrail from commercial airliner. optical illusion. i see contrails from planes in the sunset very often as i live near the airport.

do you live near SFO? I used to live in Alameda and could see and hear most of the planes taking off and landing....

In middle of ocean no plane will go initially vertically up and then lean forward like a missile.

optical illusion. don't get fooled by the impression that it was going vertically up. it could be because of the horizon. many untrained eyes are constantly fooled by contrail effects over the horizon, especially at the coast. i've seen the same effect off the coast of sf.

alameda is near oakland airport. i'm over the peninsula ridge on the coast, but it's near sfo. don't have the luxury of u watching planes land across the bay, but can see flying off over the horizon over the ocean. fall sunsets bring out their contrails. very common.
