SINGAPORE — A former staff at the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) was fined S$4,000 today (April 2) for stealing his colleague’s laptop.

Lee Kian Heng, a former senior associate engineer at DSTA, committed the offence in September last year at about 6.45pm, where he swiped his then-colleague’s laptop from the Depot Road office.

The court, which heard in mitigation that Lee was expecting to graduate from his Bachelor’s course in a few years’ time, pointed out that the mitigation had not specified the reason behind the offence.

When asked, however, his lawyer, Mr Louis Joseph described it as a “very silly act”.

He also explained that Lee himself does not understand why he decided to steal the laptop.

Mr Joseph added that his client stole the item for personal use in a “moment of unbelievable stupidity”.

The maximum penalty for theft is a jail term of three years and a fine. CHANNEL NEWSASIA

steal laptop for all we know could have given to our enemies and expose our secret.. and all he got away was a fine.

cannot imagine why those who stole milk powder or a can of beer can get free food and lodging.

Well, at least that was an upgrade from pineapple tarts and toothpicks.

"senior associate engineer" is what rank? salary power or not? Or just title power nia?

Hit glass ceiling still better than driving taxi.

he hasn't even received his Bachelor's yet. I don't think his salary is power at all considering DSTA values meritocracy.

Charge was reduced to theft. If it wasnt, he would masuk Changi. Should be a Theft in Dwelling charge.

associate engr. is a diploma holder, senior meaning he has worked few years there...

Guess the race? sure it was an upgrade...it is normally toothpicks, nasi camphor with bandung ( subsidized at $2.50), pineapple tarts, mangoes, ipads, now notebook computer, & don't forget, "yum, yum" too by woman!....

yes.
engineer level under dsta also got different grade
first class honor degree ...pay very tok gong. starting pay 4k..increment also very fast.
3rd class can join dsta also but starting pay $3k.increment take times.
associate engineer is likely dip holder pending his degree .but many HR tend to confuse associate engineer with assistant engineer

1 things all in common.
99% of dsta engineer are very snobbish specifically those that join with uni cert.
the 1% are those that climb the ladder slowly ..they understand how contractors work.
