How can a sinkie possibly survive on this kind of pay at $1865 per month, after paying their HDB flat mortgage, living and schooling expenses for their kids, etc. Simi lancheow job creation is the fucking PAP talking about? What is the PAP's point of holding a bid for new bus and existing routes, and then award the winner to a company that has no intention of ever hiring a singaporean given the wages they are offering. Bus captains stand to get a minimum basic starting salary of S$1,865, while female employees will get up to 26 weeks of paid maternity leave, comparable with fellow UK bus operator Tower Transit.
SINGAPORE: Bus operator Go-Ahead Singapore announced new employment terms and benefits for bus captains on Monday (Feb 15), as it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Transport Workers' Union (NTWU).
The terms include:
A minimum basic starting salary of S$1,865 for bus captains;
A S$2,000 sign-on bonus for experienced captains;
A one-time S$1,000 retention bonus;
A S$430 annual allowance for health, learning, and leisure programmes;
Up to 26 weeks of paid maternity leave for female employees;
Two days of elder care leave per year for all employees;
And free bus and train rides.
In November last year, Go-Ahead Singapore won the bid to run bus services in Pasir Ris and Punggol under the Government’s new bus contracting model. The UK-based operator will operate the new Loyang bus depot from the third quarter of 2016, running 25 bus routes from Changi Airport and Changi Village bus terminals, as well as the Pasir Ris and Punggol bus interchanges.
The company took over the Loyang Depot from the LTA in December 2015. It says it will begin recruitment in February, and aims to hire about 700 bus drivers.
“Our primary duty is to deliver quality public bus service and to build an engaged team of individuals,” said Go-Ahead Singapore’s Managing Director Nigel Wood. “Building our Singapore operations will take time, but the first priority will be on the people we hire.”
Speaking at the signing, NTWU Executive Secretary Melvin Yong said the employment terms Go-Ahead Singapore and the union agreed upon were in line with the national guidelines on good employment practices in the public bus industry.
These include requiring incoming bus operators like Go-Ahead to offer all affected employees a job, and giving them the flexibility to join the new operator or being redeployed, where feasible.
"NTWU is able to represent the workers hired by Go-Ahead on matters relating to their employment and workplace related issues," Mr Yong said.
He added the union is looking forward to having the agreed employment terms being recognised under a Collective Agreement with the bus operator eventually.
HIRING TERMS COMPARABLE WITH COMPETITORS
The terms and benefits are comparable to those announced by UK-based operator Tower Transit in November 2015. The operator won the Bulim Bus Package in May 2015 - the first bus package under the new contracting model.
Tower Transit announced last November its bus captains will receive a monthly basic starting pay of S$1,865, and may earn up to S$3,000 a month in overtime pay. Women drivers, who are Singaporean citizens or Permanent Residents, get 26 weeks of maternity leave and all captains get to travel free on all buses and trains.
These announcements come as Singapore transport operators seek to recruit more bus captains and meet increasing manpower needs.
As of December 2015, Tower Transit has recruited about 625 bus captains, or about 80 per cent, of the 750 positions the company plans to fill.
Local operator SMRT also announced in December 2015 that it was looking to recruit about 700 new staff, offering current employees up to S$3,000 in cash for successful job referrals.
