McDonald's Is Closing 700 Underperforming Locations

The slogan for several hundred McDonald’s restaurants might soon go from “I’m lovin’ it” to “I’m closin’ it.” With numerous locations not meeting profit expectations, the company has begun the process of closing down those “underperformers.” In total, this will result in 700 McDonald’s restaurants across the globe de-illuminating their Golden Arches.

According to Grub Street, the closures first began this quarter with 220 restaurants in the US and China and 130 Japanese locations shutting down. The company now plans to close 350 more unsatisfactory locations all over the world. This comes as a result of sales being down 11 percent from last year, with earnings for the first quarter of 2015 being at $5.9 billion. Sales for April are also expected to be in the red.

In what seems like a strategic attempt to continue cleaning up their act as they clean out some of their poorly-profiting locations, McDonald’s is also pledging to end partnerships with any suppliers that contribute to deforestation.

Profits crumbling, sales shrinking, guest traffic declining: McDonald’s to close at least 900 stores
POSTED 5:50 PM, APRIL 23, 2015, BY CNN WIRE SERVICE

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — McDonald’s is in even worse shape than we realized. Profits are crumbling, sales are shrinking and guest traffic is declining all around the world. That’s leading McDonald’s to close at least 900 of its restaurants worldwide.

Consumers are defecting for healthier and fresher options like Chipotle, the burrito chain that McDonald’s sold off almost a decade ago.

The world’s largest burger chain announced more depressing results on Wednesday, April 22nd for the first three months of 2015.

The company vows a turnaround plan is coming. It will reveal the “initial details” on May 4th. In a preview of what might be coming, McDonald’s has*announced that it’s closing at least 900 struggling restaurants, mostly in Japan, the U.S. and China.

Just how bad is it at McDonald’s? First-quarter profits tumbled by nearly $400 million, or roughly a third. That’s a steeper pace of profit declines than all of last year.

No wonder McDonald’s changed its CEO in late January. As if the burger chain didn’t have enough to deal with, it’s getting hit by the strong U.S. dollar. All those foreign restaurants aren’t helping the bottom line since the company is taking a hit on currency exchange.

The good news for McDonald’s is that investor expectations are low at this point. The stock is actually jumping over 2% Wednesday as investors are hopeful that new CEO Steve Easterbrook gets it and will bring a strong plan. They are also happy that total sales didn’t fall by more than feared.

Keep in mind the stock is roughly flat in the past year, compared with a 12% gain for the S&P 500 and a 27% surge for Chipotle.

So far, Easterbrook is working to improve McDonald’s tarnished brand by focusing on customer service and food quality. The company recently announced a pay hike for restaurant workers and plans to cut back on chicken raised on antibiotics.

McDonald’s is now testing all-day sales of breakfast items, selling sirloin burgers and perhaps even kale eventually, at least according to one analyst.

It’s also cutting back on restaurants that aren’t adding to the company’s profits.

But don’t expect the negative trends to change just yet. McDonald’s warned that its global sales are likely to fall in April as well.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One man is dead and two others are injured after a rash of gunfire outside a local fast food restaurant.

It happened in the parking lot of the McDonald's in the 400 block of Cassat Avenue near I-10 around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The victims' identities have not been publicly released yet.
Sgt. T.K. Waters with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said one victim in his mid-to-early 20's was found slumped over the steering wheel of a white vehicle.
The other two victims, he said, went into the restaurant looking for help before they were transported to a local hospital. The men were last listed in critical and stable condition.
Police responded to the scene after receiving calls of a shootout. Waters said it's believed some sort of "disturbance" unfolded before several gunshots were fired.

Investigators and evidence technicians remained on the scene throughout the night.
"We are trying now to determine who is responsible and there are a lot of witnesses, a lot of people who were inside the McDonald's and a lot of people across the street. We're going to talk to everyone we can," Waters said.
The First Coast News crew covering this story witnessed a white convertible in the parking lot surrounded by green evidence markers. It was eventually taken away on the back of a wrecker.

As of 5:30 a.m. Thursday, the restaurant remained completely roped off by police tape. Several employees were gathering across the street. At least one worker said he had no idea what was happening.
The manager of the McDonald's told First Coast News that the restaurant would be open again at 6:45 a.m. on Thursday.
This incident marks Jacksonville's second homicide in the past two days.

It's the Malays and Pinoys who still dig McD's. Many of the Chinese and Indians are shunning fast food joints because of greater health awareness.

McD's food sucks. If I wanted a good juicy unhealthy burger, I'd go for Fatboy's or Omakase rather than the anaemic Big Mac.

Anyway, the fast food industry is a sunset industry because of the global trend towards healthful eating, organic produce, and 'slow' food. Cheap food is cheat food.
