A case of miscommunication led a female passenger to slap the taxi driver twice. She thought that the driver wanted to rob her by driving her to another destination. The police was called in.
The incident took place at 6.35pm on 1 Nov (Tuesday) at Selegie, between the junction of Upper Wilkie Road and Sophia Road.
The taxi driver, 39-year-old Guo Zhong Cheng (translated) related the incident. He said the passenger, a dark-skinned foreigner, boarded his cab at Marina Bay Sands. The passenger did not state her destination clearly and merely asked him to start driving before she took a phone call.
"I vaguely heard her mentioned the word 'gie' so I started driving to Selegie. After she hung up, I asked whether she wanted me to alight her at Upper Wilkie Road and she replied “yes”. However, when I was driving up the slope leading to Upper Wilkie Road, she started swearing at me and scolding me for going the wrong way," said Mr Guo.
He stopped the taxi to reason with her but never expected a slap to come flying his way, sending his glasses to the ground.
He picked up his glasses but she continued to rant on before she raised her hand to slap him again. "I raised my hand to block her and my arm was scratched by her nails," said Mr Guo.
The angry Mr Guo then called the police while the passenger called the taxi company to complain.
"During the phone conversation, she said that I was driving her up a hilly road and suspected that I wanted to rob her and had designs on her. It was simply outrageous," said Guo.
