Singaporeans Win
(From Lee Hsien Yang's FB)

Singaporeans have shown that it is possible to be loyal, to love Singapore, to recite with pride “We the citizens of Singapore”, and to vote for the Opposition.

This crisis election should have been a piece of cake for the PAP. The PAP had expected that like the 9/11 attacks and Lee Kuan Yew’s death, Covid 19 was going to “save” the party. This election, Singaporeans have rejected the exploitation of a crisis for PAP’s political gain. The PAP has had its share of the vote seriously dented and the opposition has won the largest number of seats since independence.

The Opposition has gained ground in both the east and the west. Singaporeans have shown their repulsion for attacks like the AHTC and for gutter politics. They have given a report card on PAP’s 4G leadership and made clear they are unimpressed.

The Workers Party has performed brilliantly, winning 2 GRCs and one SMC. It has demonstrated leadership at its best, an ability to transition party leadership, and fielded strong, sparkling, youthful and diverse teams. For what was perceived as a Chinese party, it has shown the way forward for a truly multi racial Singapore. Bravo and well done indeed. The SDP has also had a very impressive showing winning 45/46% of the vote.

Against the institutionalised behemoth of the PAP in a Covid election, the PSP, a brand new party, has taken some 40% of the popular vote where it contested. This alone is an extraordinary achievement.

The West has traditionally been a PAP stronghold. PSP came within a hair’s breadth of winning in West Coast GRC. To my friend Dr Tan Cheng Bock and the team at PSP, what a great beginning and well done. I know all of you will build on this first step and work hard to create a Singapore where good values and people matter.

The PAP sought a strong mandate. Instead it has received one of its lowest vote shares in decades, and the highest number of opposition candidates in Singapore’s Parliament in over half a century. This is a wonderful victory for Singaporeans. It is a huge first step towards transparency and accountability, towards addressing the PAP’s group think and conflicts of interests, towards a Singapore which is compassionate and democratic. We are beginning to find our way out of the maze. Well done Singapore.

The West has traditionally been a PAP stronghold.

That is very true, I've been living here all my life. That's why all of you who live in the east or competitive electoral areas, don't waste your vote by voting for the PAP. You need not fear the PAP getting kicked out of power now, western SG will cover PAP's backside.
