greek wine deserves to be given away... or go into the dumpster.
Bro , what wrong with Greek wine ? I don't drink alcohol .
greeks have been making their own wine for over 6000 years, yet they are just beginning to market them aggressively to wine-drinking nations. they had quality issues in the past, but are starting to come around by jumping on the established grape variety bandwagon such as sauvignon blanc and fermenting their wines with oak and in barrels. to make it short, they improve their quality by using grapes from france and copying techniques from france, italy and spain. they have their own native grape varieties, but these are not well known or considered good in the past due to inconsistent quality and lack of improvements in wine research and production. they were living in the past for too long despite being second to iran historically for introducing wine to the world. ironic. however, new adopted techniques and grape varieties from more advanced wine-producing countries have allowed greek producers to reach quality levels unseen in their 6000 years of wine making.
their white wines that are high on my recommendation are: assyrtiko (native greek grape) from the wine region of santorini, malagousia white from the florina region, and moschofilero and roditis from the mantinia region. these are mostly 2010 and 2011 whites as the new breed of greek vintners who studied in burgundy and bordeaux for years started their wineries in the late 80s and early 90s, very young in wine years. their reds take longer to reach maturity and the quality level comparable to bordeaux and napa. so wait for a few more years before buying their 2010 and 2011 reds.
