“Long live Islam and peace.” It is these inscriptions tagged on the wall of a church in the town of Lieusaint (Seine-et-Marne) that the parishioners had the unpleasant surprise to discover, Thursday, May 4. In addition, a Star of David, inscriptions in Arabic and lines were made in black paint on the enclosure of the building, reports the weekly La République de Seine-et-Marne.
The mayor of the town, Michel Bisson, deplored an “inadmissible, unacceptable and reprehensible gesture” on the social network Facebook. “Like all Lieusaint residents, I am revolted by such acts, with a thought for our Catholic friends,” he added. The municipality told CNews that it had filed a complaint, and immediately set about cleaning the wall of the building. An investigation has been opened.
In addition, Michel Bisson announced that he would closely follow “the progress of the investigation,” which may ultimately identify the perpetrators of this act. In this sense, the town hall stressed that “the video protection system, piloted by [the] urban supervision center, will be valuable for the police in the context of their investigation.”
The Muslim Association which manages the Great Mosque of Lieusaint “strongly” condemned this act of vandalism, and expressed its “complete indignation,” says the mayor of the town. However, the Great Mosque of Lieusaint told CNews that it was skeptical that these inscriptions could have been made by Muslims.
This is not the first time that this church has been vandalized, the parish priest emphasizes. Several statues had been degraded and overthrown, but the police had not been able to arrest the perpetrators of this act.
