Tom Hanks in Australian hospital after testing positive for coronavirus

Hollywood megastar Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have tested positive for the new coronavirus while in Australia for a film project, the Oscar-winning US actor revealed Thursday.

Hanks and Wilson, both 63, are in isolation at the Gold Coast University Hospital after being confirmed with the disease, Queensland state health officials said.

Hanks is the first major Hollywood star to publicly state that he has the virus, which has sickened more than 125,000 people worldwide and killed more than 4,600.

In a message to fans, Hanks said the couple had felt slightly ill and wanted to get tested to "play things right."

"Hello folks, Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches," Hanks posted on Instagram.

"To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus, and were found to be positive," he said.

"We Hanks will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires," the "Saving Private Ryan" star said.

"We'll keep the world posted and updated," he added, along with a photo of a surgical glove placed inside a biohazard trash bag.

In a video message the Hanks' son, Chet, said, "I just got off the phone with them, they both are fine, they're not even that sick."

"They're not worried about it, they're not tripping but they're going through the necessary health precautions obviously," he said.

"I don't think it's anything to be too worried about but I appreciate everyone's concerns and well wishes, but I think it's going to be alright."

Hanks was on the Gold Coast for pre-production of an Elvis Presley biopic by Australian director Baz Luhrmann in which the actor portrays the legendary singer's longtime manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

It is believed the couple had been staying at a nearby luxury hotel.

Work on the film has been halted following the diagnosis.

"We have been made aware that a company member from our Elvis feature film... has tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus)," Warner Bros said in a statement to AFP, which did not identify Hanks.

"We are working closely with the appropriate Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the individual."

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said Hanks was "tested early this morning, very early, and once everyone was in the news was delivered by Baz and then everyone went home."

"All the people who were on set have gone home and self-quarantined, which includes my daughter so I gave her a call... Being a dad that was the first thing I got onto," Tate said.

"If the test comes back negative, they'll be back to work that's where they're sitting."

It is not known where the couple contracted the disease -- there have so far been more than 140 coronavirus cases confirmed in Australia and three people have died.

Wilson -- a singer-songwriter -- gave performances at a Brisbane hotel on March 5 and the Sydney Opera House on March 7.

During the visit to Australia's largest city, the couple also visited Bondi Beach. It is unknown whether they had contracted the virus by that point.

I'll bet it's a made up story released by their publicist for virtue signaling purposes.

In a video message the Hanks' son, Chet, said, "I just got off the phone with them, they both are fine, they're not even that sick."

If that really is the case it proves my point about the virtue signaling AND the fact that the virus is mild in the majority of those infected so there is no need for all these ridiculous measures.

When I caught the virus a few weeks ago I felt fine too. I even went for my usual bike ride.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson returned to Los Angeles on Friday after spending more than two weeks in quarantine in Australia after testing positive for the coronavirus.

The "Forrest Gump" and "Toy Story" actor and Wilson were photographed smiling while driving a vehicle in the city.

Celebrity website TMZ said the photographs were taken shortly after the pair landed at a small Los Angeles area airport. The New York Post's Page Six column said Hanks was seen touching the tarmac and dancing after getting off a private jet.

Representatives for Hanks, 63, did not immediately return a request for comment.

Hanks, a double Oscar winner and one of America's most beloved stars, and Wilson were the first big celebrities to announce they had tested positive for the disease, which has become a global epidemic with more than 27,000 deaths worldwide.

They were treated in hospital in Australia and isolated themselves for a further period after leaving.

Hanks' last posting on his Twitter account on Sunday said it had been two weeks since their first symptoms and that they were feeling better.

Hanks was in Australia working on a movie about Elvis Presley when he announced on March 11 that he and Wilson had tested positive for the disease. Filming has since been shut down on the movie, and on hundreds of other film and television productions worldwide.

But now it seems medical opinion is saying it's more deadly than the flu with higher fatality rate despite 90% had either no symptoms of very mild symptoms.

COVID-19 has been compared to the flu. Experts say that's wrong.

Even with businesses closed, travel restricted and shelter-in-place orders issued around the world, many still wonder if such extremes are needed to battle the novel coronavirus.

Some people, including the president of the United States, have said COVID-19 isn't too different from the common flu.

But, according to experts, is COVID-19 actually worse?

The short answer? Yes.

An estimated 35 million Americans were infected last flu season, and about 500,000 were hospitalized. Approximately 35,000 died.

Even with more than 10% of the U.S. population affected by the flu most years, those are stunning numbers. But businesses aren't closed and people aren't asked to stay home.

What's different now?

COVID-19 in a novel virus, which means it's new. Although similar to SARS and MERS, it's wrong to assume it will follow the same path as its coronavirus cousins -- indeed, COVID-19 already has spread far beyond either of them.

So although the seasonal flu, at least to this point, has killed more Americans, COVID-19 appears more deadly and definitely spreads more quickly.

In other words, experts told ABC News, it's not the seasonal flu.

So exactly how much worse is it? Consider this chart, which compares COVID-19 to the flu using the most recently compiled statistics.

It's still unclear exactly how deadly novel coronavirus is. The death rate may be overestimated because testing hasn't been ramped up and there could be hundreds of thousands or even millions not counted globally because they never get sick or show symptoms. The death rate, at least so far, similarly could've been affected by variables that have nothing to do with the virus itself, including overwhelmed hospitals, which contributed to Italy's estimated mortality rate of about 7%.

Perhaps most important, COVID-19 remains extremely dangerous because so many people show minimal or no symptoms -- a phenomenon often called "a silent infection." This can accelerate person-to-person transmissions because carriers of the virus simply don't know they have it.

SLIDESHOW: Coronavirus outbreak sparks global health emergency
"This disease seems to respond to social distancing, and so we can help reduce the number of people dying of COVID-19," said Dr. Pritish Tosh, medical director for Emergency Management at the Mayo Clinic. "This is not overhyping. These rather unprecedented social maneuvers are likely to help to keep otherwise vulnerable people from getting sick and dying."

More pronounced symptoms tied to COVID-19 probably would have slowed its spread.

"In general, when the flu hits you, people lie in bed and don't go out," said Dr. Simone Wildes, an infectious disease specialist at South Shore Health. "But something we are seeing with COVID-19 is that because the symptoms are mild for most of the population, they can go out and spread the disease quite easily, especially given how long you can be infectious for."

Fortunately for most patients, COVID-19 infections have proven mild, but current statistics still support recent statements by Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and White House Coronavirus Task Force expert, that COVID-19 is over 10 times as lethal as the flu.

Although they could quickly change, current data paints a morbid picture.

Especially because there isn't a current treatment.

Especially because there isn't a vaccine.

Especially because no one's really sure how this pandemic will unfold.

But now it seems medical opinion is saying it's more deadly than the flu with higher fatality rate despite 90% had either no symptoms of very mild symptoms.

That's because they have not done enough testing to show that the infection is already pretty widespread.

There are bad flu years too. If it were not for the ability to gene sequence so rapidly nowadays this corona shit would just be treated the same way.

You catch it..... more than 99% will recover from it, most of them with no long lasting issues, and then you can get on with life knowing that you are immune till the next bug comes along.

Surely that is a better way to deal with it for the vast majority of the population.

The current strategy is disastrous... no herd immunity will be established... almost everyone still vulnerable to a 2nd wave of infections, economies destroyed and nothing to show for it.

The world has truly gone mad because nobody has the ability to implement the logical way of dealing with this virus even if they want to.
