WASHINGTON - Former US secretary of state Alexander Haig, a blunt-talking top aide to three presidents, has died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, a spokesman for the facility said Saturday.

"He did pass away at approximately 1:30 am today," spokesman Gary Stephenson told AFP by telephone. The spokesman did not offer an official cause of death.

Haig, 85, served as secretary of state under president Ronald Reagan after being a top adviser to presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

Haig mounted an unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 1988, losing to the eventual nominee and then president George Bush.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that she was "deeply saddened" to learn of Haig's death.

"He served his country in many capacities for many years, earning honor on the battlefield, the confidence of presidents and prime ministers, and the thanks of a grateful nation," she said.

"On behalf of the men and women of the State Department, I extend my sincerest condolences to Secretary Haig's family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of them today," Clinton said in a statement.

The former top US diplomat had been admitted to the hospital January 28.
