Former Romanian diplomat to remain in detention

ROMANIA: A former Romanian diplomat has for the fourth time, applied unsuccessfully to be released from detention.
Silviu Ionescu is on trial for offences related to two hit-and-run accidents he allegedly committed in Singapore last year which claimed the life of a pedestrian. He has denied responsibility.
The 50 year-old former charge d’affaires request for release pending trial was earlier accepted by a Romanian court but the prosecution successfully appealed against the decision.
According to his lawyer Nelu Tasca, the former diplomat still has a last chance before the Tribunal which will be heard either on Monday or Tuesday.
If the judge from the Tribunal decides in favour of Ionescu, the decision will be final.
Silviu Ionescu has been in prison since May and is facing charges of culpable homicide, causing personal injury, making false statements and leaving the scene of an accident.
