Former law professor Tey Tsun Hang is a free man.

The 42-year-old reported to the Selarang Park Community Supervision Centre on Saturday morning to have his electronic tag removed. This after serving the last few weeks of a five-month jail term on home detention.

He did not speak to the media that was camped outside the centre but later told The Straits Times as he was leaving in a taxi that he was still not allowed to comment because he "was told (by the prison authorities) that if I did, I may get re-arrested".

Mr Tey's personal fight for his innocence is not over yet. His appeal against his conviction for six counts of corruptly obtaining gifts and sex from former student Darinne Ko will be heard in about two weeks time.

Didn't know he served his five-month jail term on home detention, that must be a lot easier than a prison..

SINGAPORE: Former law professor Tey Tsun Hang did not show up for an appeal against his conviction for corruption which was slated to start on Wednesday.

His lawyer - Mr Peter Low - told the court that he was caught by surprise that Tey did not show up. He was only informed shortly before 10am that Tey was in Kuala Lumpur with his parents.

Mr Low said he had no indication that Tey, 42, would not be attending the appeal, adding that his client had always attended all proceedings in the past, including criminal motions.

He added that Tey had instructed him to proceed with the appeal.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Andre Jumabhoy pointed out that according to the law, Tey must give good reasons for non-attendance, and if he's not able to do so, the court can choose to dismiss the appeal.

"Given the involvement the appellant has had in this appeal, his absence is worrying," said Mr Jumabhoy.

However, High Court judge Woo Bih Li stood down the case to give both parties more time to build their cases.

"I wonder what is the rationale for dismissing the appeal if the appellant isn't here but his counsel is, and he has instructions to proceed with the appeal. I wonder why the absence of good reasons should indicate why the court should dismiss the appeal," he said.

Noting that the dates were set according to Tey's request, the judge added: "One would have thought he's the one most interested in the outcome."

The hearing will resume later Wednesday.

Tey became a free man earlier this month after serving a five-month jail term for six counts of corruption obtaining gifts and sex from former student Darinne Ko.

Part of his sentence was served on home detention.

legalities aside, it doesn't say v much abt his character

his nonchalant attitude towards the appeal signals either his disinterest in the case or his guilt in the whole affair

maybe he knows he will never win in his appeal as Prof Michael D Barr clearly stated in his academic article that the fate of Prof Tey Tsun Hang, Prof Cherian George and Mr Leslie Chew are the same as this is part of the crack down of dissent by the invisible hand?

With the myth of Singapore Inc. as the perfect technocracy machine in tatters, the ruling elite needs a new narrative that accepts its status as being ordinary, not extraordinary. It has not yet seriously faced up to this reality. Instead it is trying to dampen down criticism by controlling information and intimidating critics, whether they be exalted scholars like Tsun Hang Tey and Cherian George, or humble cartoonists like Leslie Chew (Yahoo! News, 28 May 2013; The Diplomat, 8 March 2013; Yahoo News, 23 April 2013). Insofar as the government is working towards a considered, strategic response, it seems to be based as much upon suppressing criticism and reasserting control over public comment as it is with fixing problems: hence its proposed „licence‟ and S$50,000 bond (approximately US$40,000) for bloggers and media internet services who provide news or commentary on Singapore affairs (Asia Sentinel, 30 May 2013).

Peter Low caught by surprise? I nominate Peter Low for the Emmy Awards...

Unsuccessful appeal = free man. Successful appeal = free man.

Tey as a free man has NOTHING to lose by not attending. Q.E.D.

I think it is a matter of time for legal academics to dig out the court papers piece by piece to criticise the regime.
Pls dont forget that what we can see are those from SPH MSM. I believe the stories are totally different from the actual court papers which will be published soon.

a special award shall be given to Deputy Public Prosecutor Andrea Jumabhoy for beeing ignorant and stupid.

Prof Tey Tsun Hang appeal has been filed with affidavit in support of the appeal, his absent has nothing to do with the result on his appeal.

It will be a laughing stock to the legal fraternity if Prof Tey Tsun Hang case is thrown out today due to his absence.

Ahbang curry mee, do you remember Christopher Lee Meng Soon?
Drunk driving cum hit cum run. stay in prison for 4 weeks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Lee_(Singaporean_actor)

however his PR was not revoked.

Lee dangerous driving is not good for sinkie and sinkie pet dogs. however he is still driving and holding his PR.

As for SIA Pilot and Prof Tey Tsun Hang, they never harm anybody and injure life and they also never steal a single cent from sinkie government but their PR revoked? any hidden agenda?
