A netizen created a furore online when he asked why foreigners are eligible for Singapore's Baby Bonus.
The netizen posted a Baby Bonus claim form online, adding a red circle to highlight a clause that says: "If you are a foreigner...., MCYS will send you an authorisation letter to open the CDA (Child Development Account) at any OCBC Bank...."
Many netizens are outraged that foreigners are eligible for Baby Bonuses that they believe should be meant for Singaporeans.
Some suggest that the Singapore government could be desperate, that's why they are even giving foreigners money to have babies here.
The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports clarify that this clause for foreigners applies to those who have children of Singaporean nationality. These children are therefore eligible for a Child Development Account.

I suspect some minister is being pressured to "show result" on the birthrate. Don't expect to see any statistics on foreigners birth versus Citizen birth.

Exactly. The bonus should only be for SGrean babies with SGrean parents (at least father must be SGrean). If not, there is a very high chance the money will go down the drain when the child renounces SGrean citizenship by moving overseas. If the parents need the baby bonus so much, they should convert to SGrean citizenship first to show their commitment to SG.

Er...what the fuck does that mean? It means if a couple from India come to Singapore. Then the wife gives birth to a kid in a Singapore hospital and automatically that kid is of Singaporean nationality or what?

While a baby boy born in a Singapore hospital to a Singaporean father was classified as ’stateless’ since birth and recently deported to Malaysia, foreigners whose babies are born in Singapore are entitled to the ‘Baby Bonus’ which is funded by Singapore taxpayers.

According to the Ministry of Community, Youth and Sports (MCYS), foreigners can open a Child Development Account (CDA) in Singapore which will enable the Baby Bonus to be deposited there so long their babies are registered as Singapore citizens
