More Chinese women trafficked by gangs

BEIJING: Transnational crime gangs are trafficking an increasing number of Chinese women into forced prostitution in South-east Asia, Europe and Africa, motivated by the high profit and helped by the gullibility of their rural victims, state media reported yesterday.

The official China Daily cited a senior police officer as saying that most of the trafficked women are from poor rural areas and have been cheated by criminal gangs into thinking they are leaving to pursue overseas studies or well-paying jobs.

The paper quoted Mr Chen Shiqu, head of the anti-trafficking office of the Ministry of Public Security, as saying that most of China's trafficking cases are domestic, with women being taken from poor areas in south-western China's Yunnan and Guizhou provinces and forced into marriage elsewhere in the country.

But 'there has been a growing trend for organised transnational human trafficking crime groups to target Chinese women for forced prostitution in foreign countries', he told the China Daily.

The officer did not provide specific figures, but added that in November, the police rescued 15 Chinese women who had been trafficked to Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for prostitution. Two Chinese suspects were detained at the time, he said.

He also cited Malaysian police statistics as saying that 5,453 Chinese women suspected of working as prostitutes had been detained in the year up till last November.

There is an increasing need for more international cooperation, as trafficking across countries can involve various organised crime groups, said Mr Chen.

Mr Dai Peng, head of the investigation department of the Chinese People's Public Security University, said the lack of financial and manpower resources is hindering the Chinese police's efforts in the fight against international trafficking.

The Chinese police have busted 9,165 trafficking cases and rescued 17,746 women since the ministry launched a special campaign in April 2009, according to statistics from Mr Chen's office.

But there was no indication on where the women had been rescued.

China is both a destination and source for human trafficking, and anecdotal evidence suggests that the cross-border trafficking of women is on the rise, according to the United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking's website on the situation in the country.

Destinations for victims of Chinese trafficking include Thailand, Malaysia, and countries in Africa, Europe and America, according to a fact sheet for last year, compiled by the UN project.

They don't have to be forced. Most PRC women LOVE the job. It's their default career choice. :p
