With zoo closed to visitors, pandas finally bang after 10 years
by Alex Linder

The coronavirus pandemic has given a pair of pandas in Hong Kong enough alone time to finally get it on.

Keepers at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park have been trying unsuccessfully for 10 years to get 14-year-old pandas Ying Ying and Le Le to mate naturally. A decade-long effort that had proven fruitless.

However, with the zoo closed to visitors since late January because of the Covid-19 outbreak, staff began noticing changes in the animals’ behavior.

“Since late March, Ying Ying began spending more time playing in the water, while Le Le has been leaving scent-markings around his habitat and searching the area for Ying Ying’s scent,” reads a statement from the zoo.

Following this foreplay, Ocean Park proudly announced that the two pandas had succeeded in natural mating on Monday morning.

“The successful natural mating process today is extremely exciting for all of us, as the chance of pregnancy via natural mating is higher than by artificial insemination,” said the zoo which promises to keep us all updated about this momentous occasion.
