SINGAPORE - Singapore football officials vowed "zero tolerance" of racism Wednesday after a visiting Liberian player responded to racial taunts by raising his middle finger to the crowd.

Abuse of Terengganu's Francis Forkey Doe, 26, began in the warm-up of Tuesday's Malaysia Cup quarter-final second leg against Singapore's Lions XII, and was also directed at a dark-skinned linesman, according to witnesses.

"There was a group of maybe seven or eight fans at the opposite end of the grandstand who were making racial slurs... Orang hitam (black man) and even nigger also came out," undergraduate Muhammad Nadjad Bin Abdul Rahim, 24, told AFP.

"The rest of the crowd would cheer these guys and some joined in," he added.

Racist jeers were also heard when the linesman awarded a throw-in for Terengganu in an incident involving Doe.

"A guy made a comment 'sama (same) colour' and there was a big cheer," Muhammad said.

Doe, who had incurred the wrath of Singapore fans over an incident in which Hariss Harun was sent off in the first leg, made the rude gesture to fans during the warm-up, the witness added.

"They kept calling me 'monkey' and 'black' and I didn't appreciate that... Why call me those names? Because I'm black? Because I'm African?" the player told Singapore's The New Paper.

"Football is a game, a friendly game. You can't say things like that. It's not right."

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said it had not been informed of the incident, but stated that it took a strong stance against racism.

"We have a zero-tolerance policy for any form of racism and have always stressed that there is no place for racial discrimination in our society," a spokesperson from FAS said.

Race cases have hit the headlines in football recently with former England captain John Terry facing charges of alleged racial abuse. In Italy, Lazio and Juventus were both fined with week for racist chanting by their fans.

Terangganu reached the Malaysia Cup semi-finals 1-0 on aggregate.

why are the m&d players and supporters abusing the african players with racial taunts like "black guy". it's not like they had fair skins themselves.

What a sensitve cissy player!

There is nothing unusually racist about a few personal comments in a highly competitively-charged game with intense rivalry. This isn't a game of chess!

Oh look! malays being racist!

Aren't these buggers the ones always complaining all the time about racism from chinese yet it seems that they themselves are racist pricks.

Unfortunately for this black player nothing will happen. It's the same siutuation like in the us where one race is allowed to be racist and complain of racism only and the m&ds are the protected species here.

If it was some chinese fans that said that to a malay player you wouldn't be writing it this way.

malays are quite racist to black players cos their minahs like to go for african men. It's common to see malay gals with african guys and these bastards are super beh song and racist and somehow that's ok cos in sg only chinese are responsible for racism.

It makes no difference to me what race calls someone else by a rascist remark - to me it depends on the circumstances. In an office environment, I do not think it appropriate, however on the field where robust body-contact games are played, it is fine by me - provided it is not used continuously. In NHL hockey, fist brawls are allowed - and it is just another dimension to the game, a good player will keep his cool and concentrate getting the puck into the opponent's goal and not be derailed by brute tactics.

Cheers!

Well the brawls in those hockey matches are very different from racist chants. Racist chants are not allowed in any sports game in the US. I find it even more ridiculous that it's actually occuring here in sg. Definitely not condoned.

Well, I do not condone them either, but I wouldn't take them seriously. I'd take it just as spur of the moment utterance in this case here.

Cheers!

What happened was a bloody shame. Why racist taunts? These fans ought to be arrested and charged.
