SINGAPORE — Over 30 beneficiaries in the Joo Chiat area, including charities and religious organisations, have extra reasons to celebrate this Chinese New Year.
A total of 5,000 bags of rice - weighing over 25,000 kilograms - were donated to these community groups at the Siglap South Community Centre on Friday (3 February).
This is part of the "Have You Eaten?" project by DFI Retail Group, which operates Giant, Cold Storage and CS Fresh. United Overseas Bank (UOB) also helped in the distribution of the bags of rice.
The campaign, which began in partnership with The Food Bank Singapore last year, hopes to provide one million meals in two years to the less fortunate in Singapore.

Distribution to elderly and vulnerable

The rice donation was made to the Joo Chiat Division of Marine Parade GRC, which will be distributing the bags of rice to community partners who serve the elderly and vulnerable in both the Joo Chiat ward and the wider Marine Parade GRC.
Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong, who is also Member of Parliament for Joo Chiat in the Marine Parade GRC, attended the rice distribution event. He was joined by Lee Yik Hun, DFI's marketing director for food and own brand (Southeast Asia), and Luke Siew, UOB's first vice-president (cards and payments, personal financial services).
"Rice is a key aspect of our daily meals. Yet for some, just putting rice on the table can be a challenge," Mr Tong said at the event. "Initiatives like the ‘Have You Eaten?’ campaign help provide for those who may require a helping hand."
The public can also join in DFI's efforts to help bridge the hunger gap. For every 1kg of Meadows Thai Fragrant Rice sold at retail outlets like Giant, Cold Storage and CS Fresh, DFI will contribute 10 cents towards providing rice in support of The Food Bank Singapore’s beneficiaries.

See how kind PAP is to old farts? With PAP around, the old farts will never starve to death. There will always be enough rice for them.
