American troops have reportedly withdrawn from their observation post in the town of Kobani in northern Syria as the Turkish Army advances deeper south and Damascus says it has sent its military to the area.
The pullout began after 3pm local time, Turkey’s Anadolu news agency reported, citing security sources. There has been no confirmation from the Pentagon. The American observation post in Kobani, the strategic town also known as Ayn Al-Arab, came under Turkish artillery fire on Saturday. No one was hurt and it’s unclear if the attack was deliberate.
A small number of US troops have also reportedly left their station in the town of Ain Issa, a Kurdish administration center located an hour’s drive south of Kobani. This happened as Turkish-backed militias were advancing on the city. The troops were relocated to other bases in Syria, according to the Washington Post.
Earlier reports claimed that US troops in Ain Issa were left isolated after Turkish-backed forces took control of the M4 highway, a key supply route in northern Syria that runs through the city.

US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said on Sunday that the US is planning to evacuate about 1,000 troops from northern Syria. “We have American forces likely caught between two opposing advancing armies, and it’s a very untenable situation,” he told CBS. “There is no way they could stop 15,000 Turks from proceeding south.”
The Turkish Defense Ministry said on Sunday that its troops have pushed 30-35km into the Kurdish-held territory, several kilometers beyond its proposed 30km ‘safe zone.’

Meanwhile, the Kurdish-led administration in northern Syria said it had reached an agreement with Damascus for Syrian government troops to be deployed along the border with Turkey. The Syrian Army entered the city of Manbij in the northern province of Aleppo late on Sunday, Lebanese broadcaster Al Mayadeen reported. They are said to be planning to reach Kobani, some 60km away, within 48 hours. RT’s sources in the region have confirmed the report.
With the Syrian Army on the move, pressure is mounting on Turkey, according to Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma.
“The Syrian government is going to try to go across and get the oilfields, the gas fields that are so crucial for Syria’s economic wellbeing,” he said, adding that they also want to take control over prime agricultural land and the Tabqa Dam, which the Americans and the Kurds have held. Landis fears that without enough diplomatic effort, an all-out war could break out between Turkey and Syria.

The Turkish military entered northern Syria as part of the so-called “Operation Peace Spring,” with Ankara saying it would establish a buffer zone for the return of Syrian refugees. However, it is also aimed against the Kurdish militia who Turkey considers to be terrorists, and has led to an exodus of Kurdish civilians from the area.
Ankara’s move has been condemned internationally, and several Western countries have halted their military supplies to Turkey in retaliation. US President Donald Trump, who has come under heavy criticism for pulling out American troops and thus “betraying Kurdish allies,” on Sunday threatened to impose “powerful sanctions on Turkey.” Those could personally target Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, Trump is unlikely to change his mind about the withdrawal, which he says was needed to end the “endless war.”

Donald Trump has ordered an urgent evacuation of remaining US troops from northern Syria, saying that Washington won’t take sides in the conflict between Turkey and the Kurds.
“Very smart not to be involved in the intense fighting along the Turkish Border, for a change,” Trump wrote on Twitter. He added that his predecessors “made a bad decision” when they involved the US “into the Middle East Wars.”
At the start of the week, the US-led NATO bloc member, Turkey, launched a massive military operation against the Kurdish forces in northern Syria, who have been Washington’s main allies in fighting the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).
He rejected calls for the US to defend the Kurds, saying: “Others may want to come in and fight for one side or the other. Let them!” As for Washington, it will only be “monitoring” the situation in northern Syria, he added.
.....The Kurds and Turkey have been fighting for many years. Turkey considers the PKK the worst terrorists of all. Others may want to come in and fight for one side or the other. Let them! We are monitoring the situation closely. Endless Wars!

Trump has ordered a “deliberate evacuation” of the remaining 1,000 US troops from northern Syria as they were caught between the advancing Turkish military and the Kurdish forces, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper told CBS’ Face the Nation program.
The president’s order was made late on Saturday and urged the pullout to be organized “as safely and quickly as possible,” he said.
The US has already recovered several dozen of its servicemen, who used to be embedded with the Kurdish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), thus basically giving Ankara the green light to launch its military operation. The Kurds decried the move by Washington as a betrayal.

The US initially tried to talk Turkey out of intervening in northern Syria, with Trump even threatening to “wipe out” the country’s economy. But Ankara, who says it is looking to create a “safe zone” near its border with the Kurdish-held areas, dismissed the US threats.

The US won't fight fellow NATO member Turkey over the Kurds in Syria, President Donald Trump has said, while also suggesting the Kurds may be releasing terrorist prisoners just to get the US involved.
In early Monday tweets, Trump defended his decision to hastily pull American troops and negotiators from the north of Syria, where a Turkish military operation against Kurdish fighters is in full swing. Trump's critics have called the move a betrayal of the Kurds, who up to recently had been America's principal allies on the ground in Syria. Kurdish leaders have now turned to Damascus, striking a deal that will see Syrian government troops deployed to the area.
Still, Trump doesn't think these allies are worth fighting another NATO member over. "Do people really think we should go to war with NATO Member Turkey?" he tweeted, repeating the threat of "big sanctions on Turkey."
....Kurds may be releasing some to get us involved. Easily recaptured by Turkey or European Nations from where many came, but they should move quickly. Big sanctions on Turkey coming! Do people really think we should go to war with NATO Member Turkey? Never ending wars will end!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 14, 2019
The Kurds "may be releasing some" of their Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS) prisoners specifically to get the Americans involved, Trump speculated. Earlier, a senior commander of the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces, the main Kurdish military force in the region) did say guarding IS prisoners will no longer be "top priority" in the face of the Turkish offensive. Separate Kurdish-sourced reports said hundreds of IS-affiliated prisoners already escaped when prisons came under Turkish fire.
However, the escapees aren't a US concern, Trump said, instead chiding Europe for missing the "chance to get their ISIS prisoners" earlier and for relying instead on the US to "pay the cost." Kurdish forces are reportedly holding up to 100,000 IS fighters and members of their families, captured during operations in Syria.
The operation in Syria has already pitted Turkey against its NATO allies, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan implying that other alliance members are supporting "terrorists" (the official Turkish stance on Kurdish fighters) instead of a fellow member state.

Operation Spring of Peace saw Turkish forces cross over into northern Syria last week, with a stated goal of advancing some 30-35km into its territory to clear it of Kurdish terrorists. Ankara says it wants to create a buffer zone to prevent Kurds from infiltrating into Turkish land.

Using a stock photo has backfired on Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fl), who wished the US Navy happy birthday in a tweet using a picture of the Russian battleship 'Pyotr Velikiy.'
The tweet appeared on the morning of October 13 when the US Navy was celebrating its 244th birthday. It was soon deleted, but not before Politico’s deputy defense editor Dave Brown called it out, noting: “That's the Russian battlecruiser 'Pyotr Velikiy.'”

Mast, a US Army veteran who lost both legs and a finger in Afghanistan, made another congratulatory tweet using an official video from the US Navy. But it was too late.
Commenters on social media slammed the Purple Heart recipient for his blunder, especially since he already had ‘a Russian connection.’ Mast received a $2,173 donation in 2018 from an “Igor Furman.” Prosecutors have insisted that this is the Furman, a Ukrainian businessman and associate of Rudi Giuliani, who was arrested on Wednesday along with several associates. They were charged with funneling illegal foreign contributions to Republican PACs in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections.
Mast’s spokesperson said the congressman would return the donation that he had received through the “Protect the House” fundraising committee.
While commenters were engaging in sinister speculation, other internet sleuths suggested that Mast's use of the Russian battleship image may have resulted from a careless choice of stock photos. The picture was apparently taken near Kronstadt naval base in St. Petersburg a few years ago and then ended up on the Shutterstock website with the ship's number and other markings removed.

‘Pyotr Velikiy’ is a heavy nuclear-propelled missile cruiser, and the only member of the Kirov class currently in service. The 28,000-ton, two-reactor vessel carries 20 P-700 Granit cruise missiles as her primary anti-ship weapon, as well as an array of anti-aircraft missiles to protect herself and her convoy. She is currently deployed in the Barents Sea with 15 other ships and submarines in her role as the flagship of Russia’s Northern Fleet.
