14 July 2012 | Xinjiang, Uygur Autonomous Region
A sudden flash flood overturned a truck loaded with 14 people Saturday in Turpan Prefecture,
northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, killing eight.
The incident happened at just after noon when the truck was moving along a road that was close to
a riverbed.
The flash flood broke out suddenly and swept the truck off the road and into the river. The torrent of
flood was almost 2 m deep and 100 m wide.
Most of the passengers were washed out of the truck. Three were trapped on the turned truck, while
one was whirled into the flood, two were swept to a shoreline 2 km away and one died soon after the
incident.
Firefighters were able to rescue five people using a crane and safety ropes and sent them immediately
to hospital. They are still searching for the one missing person.
Meanwhile, a hail and rain storm pelted Karamay, another city in Xinjiang on Saturday afternoon.
The hail and rain started around 17:00, with small hailstones falling for around 10 minutes. The rain
lasted for about half an hour with 38 mm of accumulated rainfall.
The rainstorm caused major flooding on roads, slowing traffic along some stretches.
